Product Description

Product Description

First published in 1927, "Osborn's" is the classic, concise dictionary of legal terms. Renowned for its comprehensive coverage including an extensive listing of journals, law reports and their abbreviations, it offers speedy access to a mass of technical terms and phrases in both English and European law. Extensive legal referencing takes all entries beyond definitions and basic context to provide a solid basis for further research. The ninth edition of "Osborn's Concise Law Dictionary" has been substantially updated by a team of contributors from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. They have retained the distinctive features of previous editions whilst drawing on their expertise in many diverse areas of law to explain often complex, legal vocabulary in a way that is informative and easy to understand. Changes to this edition include fully revised and updated entries to take account of recent legal developments including new terminology introduced by the Woolf Reforms, the Human Rights Act 1998 as well as developments in intellectual property, environment law and data protection law. It provides greatly expanded coverage of EU law; and more traditional, Latin phrases not readily available in any other publication. "Osborn's Concise Law Dictionary" is an essential reference for anyone studying law, as well as those in legal practice. It will also be of considerable use to accountants and anyone working in commerce or industry.

Containing more legal terms than a student of the subject is likely to need, the Dictionary comes in a easy to read format. It covers not only the current legal terms but also those with historical significance for the legal historian. This book is a must buy for any Law student.

Since I bought this book, I have thrown its predecessor dictionary away. The previous one was slightly cheaper and included, oddly, lots of basic law terms (which one would understand anyway) and omitted the more arcane ones (which were the reason for buying the book in the 1st place). Simple test for a dictionary: remember the last few legal terms with which you were unfamiliar, go into the nearest bookshop and look them up. This book is excellent for its coverage of Latin and Norman French 'legalese' as well as terms that have fallen into disuse many centuries ago (save for in the language used by certain Law Lords until recently!) This is by far the best legal dictionary that you will find - and is worth the investment as, sadly, despite Lord Woolf's attempts, latin phrases still curry favour!
