Well Done - Concise and Relevant 12 Aug. 2001
By Lawrence Abraham - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This book provides all the necessary information required for approaching and presenting flies to trout. Each different chapter and section covers an essential aspect in prospecting for trout. I especially liked the section on water temperature and its effect on trout feeding and behaviour - I now use a thermometer each time I go fishing - something I wish that I had done before. If you want a concise and relevant book without a lot of unnecessary information - this one does the trick.
Good Basic Book on Fly Fishing in Streams 5 Sept. 2014

Tom Rosenbauer is the author of a number of books on fly fishing that he has written specifically for Orvis. I have read several and found this one, as the others, well written, well illustrated, and very informative. The material concentrates on the principle elements of streams (rocks, pools, riffles), how currents in those environments drive where fish lie, and how to approach and fish each one. Fishing 'pools' gets three chapters alone, with individual chapters devoted to mid stream rocks, and riffles and runs. Other topics include how fish 'see and feel' and how that drives the approach of the fisherman, and a chapter on river conditions (small, large, deep, shallow, high water, low water, fast, slow) affect approach. Using different types of flies for different situations is part of each chapter along with using different casting techniques. However, discussion on specific fly patterns or the mechanics of specific casting techniques are not covered here--you would need to go to other books (Orvis/Rosenbauer along with many others) for coverage of those topics. Photo illustrations here are mostly 'fishing pictures' and only sometimes clearly illustrate a particular point. However, there are many diagrams/sketches which do illustrate specific points which I found particularly useful.

This book is aimed at those who are somewhat new to fishing streams and really is aimed specifically at fly casters; spinning rod techniques are not mentioned. Although I have fished streams and rivers off and on through the years, depending on my living location, I found this book really helped me understand how and, to me as important, why to fish streams in certain ways to improve my chance of success.
This book was published it 2013 and represents essentially a revised edition of Rosenbauer's 1999 book 'Reading Trout Streams', also an Orvis title.
