Small Streams, Big Book 16 Oct. 2011
By Andrew Schonbek - Published on
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Tom Rosenbauer's Orvis fly fishing guides are generally pretty good books. This one is no exception, notwithstanding the fact that it represents somewhat of a departure.

The format of Small Stream Fly Fishing crosses over from information guide to coffee table book. It is large, hard covered, and filled with big (in some cases full page and even two page spreads) color photographs. The price is bumped up accordingly - this one is 35 bucks, about $ 10 more than others in the series.

Is it worth it? Depends what you're looking for.

Rosenbauer provides a solid overview of targeting trout in tiny waters and does a good job describing the particular charm of this kind of fishing. After reading it, assuming that you have basic fishing skills, you'll be ready to venture out and give it a try. And during those long winter months, leafing through the book and looking at the pictures will be a pleasurable pastime to help fend off cabin fever.

But if you're looking for a lot of advanced technical information, Trout From Small Streams by Dave Hughes might be a better fit.

Finally a book that actually honors it's own title!! 18 Dec. 2012

At first, I thought that I would find a lot of repetitive info, because I have read a lot of books from the same author, but I was wrong, as there is a very fresh approach to the subject. Excellent information, to the point, and I must say very practical, I was able to put into practice a lot of tips from the book just a few days after buying it, with excellente results. Also, makes clear a lot of myths regarding small stream fishing, like the need of puny diminutive tackle for this kind of fishing.

The photography is first rate, too. And, HURRA!!!, no wasted space on general subjects like casting basics. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

The concise descriptions and vernacular as well as the mechanics of fly fishing these streams, makes this book an excellent choice. I have fished for years and found enough information in this book to give me some advantage on streams. I am glad I bought it and highly suggest it for those fishing or plan some small stream fishing.

Expertise+Great Teaching Skills+ Passion for small streams = a must have book 28 Aug. 2011
By Boris Karaman - Published on
Format: Hardcover
This beautiful, extraordinary book opens a door into an intimate, vibrant and rewarding world. Rosenbauer provides everything you need to know to enjoy that small stream near you. Buy it. Read it. You will find great fishing which is immensely satisfying and often much more accessible than the storied "destination waters" pictured in the fly fishing magazines. When time and money to travel are scarce, you will still feel rich with fishing opportunities in streams you would scarcely notice before reading this book. When you step into that shallow water, you will know exactly what to do. I owe the author a great debt of gratitude, for his book is a gift of waters, waters I never knew existed.

A small stream fishing handbook 28 Nov. 2013
By Stonyb - Published on

I teach trout fishing to children and adults, and I recommend this book wholeheartedly to someone who wants to learn small stream fishing. Tom Rosenbauer is a definitive expert on reading trout water and tactics, and his easy and open writing style paints a vivid picture for fishermen, from novice to experienced. I have fly fished for trout in rivers and small streams for 25 years now, and Tom Rosenbauer books have been with me for much of that journey. As a student of the sport, you can read and reread this books and gain insights as you develop skills and a base of on-water experience.
