Product Description

When a child is found dead among the charred remains of a pier fire, surrounded by the old-fashioned toys of the Greek God Dionysus and a ritualistic fire basket, Detective Inspector Hildreth calls in the local museum's curator, Alex Kish, to help him decipher the mysterious symbolism. Soon Hildreth and Kish are caught up in a race against time to interpret these ancient codes before the killer strikes again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read everything Duffy writes!, 26 July 2009
This review is from: Orpheus Trail, The (Paperback)
I am not a thriller reader, but this is a very literary thriller, like her previous Alchemy - Maureen Duffy is literary to the bone, and at heart a poet, I think, more so as her career goes on. The high spots in this book for me were images that were pure poetry, flaming on the page, often tragic but beautiful images of dead children (I found myself wondering whether the author had seen dead children during the second world war, when she was herself a child.) The thriller element certainly WORKED - I got more and more drawn in, wondering who the criminals really were, needing to know. But I couldn't help wondering if the author were more interested really in the ancient myths and rituals that underlie this modern story: the poetry more than the prose. See her wonderful recent collection of poems, Family Values from Enitharmon Press, for more evidence that she is one of our great British writers.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Decent Thriller, 20 July 2011
By
Mrs. C. Colbert (Blackburn, Lancashire, UK) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Orpheus Trail, The (Paperback)
This is a decent thriller, and at just over 200 pages long I thought it was just long enough to keep my interest but not too long that I got bored.

The main protagonist is Alex, a museum curator in a seaside town, who comes across as quite likeable and very imaginative if a little indecisive. He is taken into the confidence of the local Detective (an armchair archaeologist himself) who trusts his judgement and knowledge on the Greek myths which seem to be a recurring theme in the young boys' murders.

It seems that there is somebody with a knowledge of ancient beliefs who is killing boys in bizarre circumstances. Together with Hilary, an expert from the London museum, they try and discover who is carrying out these killings.

Maureen Duffy is a poet and her descriptive writing paints a wonderful picture of a cold and miserable seaside town just after Christmas and the aftermath of the discovery of another body -

"The town decorations were still up but the chains of light swinging in a cold wind from the grey edgy sea looked exhausted and forlorn. The party was over. The millenium that had begun with such optimism in a glittering firework of hope and energy, of relief that the bloody 20th century was behind us, had been eclipsed almost at once by the choking fumes of despair as the juggernaut rolled out again in all its trappings of torn flesh and bloodied wounds."

Alex and Hilary discover that there is more to the boys' murders than first suspected and it seems that someone is watching them.......

This was an intelligent thriller that wasn't exactly a page turner but I enjoyed it overall.

3.0 out of 5 stars Review of The Orpheus Trail, 6 July 2009
By
Mr. T. A. Pitman (Beckenham Kent England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Orpheus Trail, The (Paperback)
Somewhat mysteriously, my book group chose this. However, it is a good read, well paced. I presume the message is that we are shaped by many historical influences and that Christianity is just one of those and no better than many other cultural/historical/god worshipping influences. It is a fair enough view.

It is a modern setting though involving a twisted unidentified group of repulsive child smugglers. There are murders or deaths of pre teenage boys. The narrator is an isolated character, emotionless. It is suggested that modern technology contributes to his lack of emotion but such types have lived through the ages. My own children communicate a lot through technology but are very emotional.

The ending was a bit contrived and seemed an anti climax. Perhaps with the TV spin off in mind?
