Product Description

Product Description

Thirteen-year-old orphan Meryt-Re lives with her aunt's family in the ancient Egyptian village of Set Maat, home of the pharaohs' tomb builders. When her uncle pressurises her to marry a dull stonecutter, she resists, and begs for guidance from the gods - but she's unable to decipher the message behind her vivid dreams. Then her cousin falls gravely ill, and Meryt's uncle, believing her to have turned the gods against him, banishes her from his house. Other strange and suspicious activities are going on in the village, and there is unrest among the tomb workers. But it is not until she meets the village wise woman that Meryt can begin to unravel the meaning of her dreams and solve the mysteries surrounding her. A romantic and pacy thriller that brings ancient Egypt to life.

About the Author

Gill Harvey studied French and Philosophy at Oxford. After experimenting with a number of careers, she eventually got a job as a writer/editor at Usborne Publishing in 1994. Five years later, and having reached the position of Senior Editor and completed an MA in Modern Literature, Gill decided to go freelance. Since then, writing has become a way of life. Her love of horses has resulted in eight of the Heartland titles for Scholastic Inc under the name of Lauren Brooke; she has also written a couple of Hodder Children's Books Animal Ark series as Lucy Daniels. A year spent commuting to Egypt led to the writing of Orphan of the Sun, Gill's first book for Bloomsbury.

What a brilliant read - this book really stands out from the crowd. It's the story of Meryt-Re, a young girl in ancient Egypt. It gives some really vivid details of her daily life in a small Egyptian village, but is also a really gripping story. I missed my bus because I was immersed in it! Basically Meryt has her fair share of problems such as an arrogant cousin and an uncertain future...but her life takes a mysterious turn when she notices intrigue at work in the village. And her dreams are trying to tell her something too! If you like Caroline Lawrence's books you'll probably love this - buy this book NOW!

This book has everything to keep your eyes glued to the pages, and the pages turning as fast as you can read them!

Gill Harvey brings the world of magic and gods, mystery and superstition to life so well that you can feel the heat of the sun and smell the perfumed wigs as you read. The plot is utterly gripping and the characters became so real to me as I read that I miss them now I've finished the book.

This book has the makings of a children's classic. I heartily recommend it.

This should appeal to adults and older children alike. It has a marvellous sense of place and a large cast of interesting characters with a cliffhanger ending - I don't usually read books aimed at younger readers but this is so intelligently written and well-researched that I am recommending it to friends. Gill Harvey could well be the next JK!
