This is one of the best new shows I have seen in years, and I am currently convincing everyone I know to watch it! Without giving the plot away, having one actress play the majority of the main characters is no mean feat. That Tatiana Maslany is able to pull it off without it feeling like just another novelty factor is incredible. That said, it is a show which is difficult to explain and I was initially put off by descriptions of the plot sounding overly complicated and sci-fi-ish. In reality, the science is balanced by the developing relationships between the characters, giving it a real heart. The background to the story is revealed as the series progresses, and I watched far too many episodes in one sitting simply because I had to find out what was happening!

Watch it!

A young woman is at a bar drinking when her foster brother walks in, and the story this woman tells is not believable. Sarah woke up from a nap while riding the train, gets off, makes a call, and then walks down the train walkway. She sees another woman pacing, and the other woman is weeping as she takes off her coat and neatly lays it on her shoes, she looks up and then jumps in front of the train. Beside the shock of this woman killing herself, she looks exactly like Sarah. Sarah in the heat of the moment steals the handbag and meets up with her foster brother,

Tatiana Maslany, plays Sarah. She is close to her adopted brother, Felix, played by Jordan Gavaris, and she tells him about her experience and that she has left her abusive lover. Sarah decides to take on the persona of Beth after she sees the lovely apartment, car and clothes Beth has. She also has a very handsome boyfriend, and a plethora of secrets. The first episode alone is enough to snare you in, and has the series moves along, so do we.

This is an exciting, well written not so sci-fi drama. The storyline moves quickly, and you may need to watch the episodes twice to keep up, and to observe every nuance. Tatiana Maslany is as fine an actress as I have seen, she develops the character(s) as we move along. The acting is superb, and we never know what is behind the next curtain. Season One on BBC America is done, and we await season two at the end of March.

There must be a different show called Orphan Black that has everybody raving, because the one I saw was annoying, vapid, cliché - riddled nonsense.
If you're reading these reviews you'll no doubt already know what Orphan Black is about, so let's skip to the good and the bad points:
Good Points: The actress playing Sarah, Tatiana Maslany, is talented, and very versatile.
Bad Points: The show is ponderous in the extreme, and stuffed to the gills with extraneous twaddle and needless plot twists that exist only to force in additional running time; nothing of value is added.
The aforementioned Sarah is an arrogant, unlikable character who uses everybody else to get what she wants. All the other incarnations of her clone are similarly unpleasant. And it doesn't stop there - Felix (the obligatory gay friend) is also fairly mercenary, and a crudely clichéd homosexual. Again and again, each character is consumed with self-interest.
In summation, Orphan Black is a flabby, self - indulgent mess of a show; you could easily fit the entire story into three episodes, and it would be all the better for it - much more coherent and gripping.
Also, I take issue with the crude and offensive stereotypes; it is as if the makers of the show got together and said: "Right, we need a black guy, an Asian guy, a gay guy, oh, and a British villain - obviously."
I'm genuinely baffled as to how so many people could like something so trite and shallow.

I acknowledge being squarely in the minority here, but I didn't really take to Orphan Black. It wasn't utterly deplorable, it just wasn't very good either, and I struggled to make it to the end - then when I got there, I wondered why I'd bothered.

My issues were;

I didn't actually believe in any of the characters, because the lead actress played them all. Seriously, how can one actress play umpteen characters to equal depth and intensity? Not possible, and this led to a really 'patchy' feeling throughout.

The plot was a bit different from the norm, which is good, but some episodes lingered forever on parts of the storyline which added nothing. A full hour later and the plot hadn't moved forward sometimes, but nor had the characters. This might have made a decent 100 minute film, but a series was just stretching it way too thin!

The production didn't have that rawness or noir that I've come to expect from recent European box set standards - they've raised the bar and this didn't match the new benchmark.

Finally, and back to characters, I'm afraid I didn't like or empathise with ANY of them.

This is a well executed show. Tatiana Maslany is astonishing as she convincingly plays many parts. The story is superb and all well acted. I would recommend this show to anyone as it holds your attention throughout and I am desperate to watch season 2 but hugely disappointed that it's not part of my prime membership like the first. Outstanding show, one of the best I've seen in a long time.
