Product Description

Product Description

6th British Airborne Division's attacks on 'Pegasus' Bridge and the Merville Battery are remembered as two of the most remarkable actions which took place in Normandy on 6 June 1944. The division fought for far longer than just one day, however, achieving a great deal of success by securing the Allied left flank and creating a firm base from which a breakout into the French interior could be launched. The strengths, weaknesses and sheer drama of airborne warfare are all encapsulated in the opening week of the division's operations in Normandy as its lightly armed but highly trained and motivated troops sought to overcome a more heavily armed enemy desperate to unhinge the invasion. Starting with an examination of 6th Airborne Division, its plan and the German opposition, Lloyd Clark provides an overview of British operations east of the River Orne from the initial landings in the early hours of 6 June to the capture of Breville seven days later. The battlefield tours which follow include the famous and dramatic assaults on 'Pegasus' Bridge and the Merville Battery, but also the lesser known struggle to secure the British southern flank around Le Bas de Ranville, Longueval and St. Honorine on 6-7 June and the Battle of Breville on 12 June.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great insights into airborne warfare in Normandy, 24 Jun 2004
This book offers some really useful insights in the difficulty of planning, launching a fighting airborne operations. It is, in a sense, a great shame that the book is not 400 pages long as the author seems to have so much more to say than he can in this relatively slim volume. However, that is not a criticism of this book as it sets out to be part hisotry and part battlefield tour, more a bravo to the author for bringing the fighting of 6th Airborne Division to life so well and making so many interesting (albeit too brief!) observations. The thing I particularly liked was the dispassionate approach to the subject - because there is criticism of the British and the Germans where necessary - something which seemed to be missing from the D-Day commemorations recently (but understandably). So, this is a fantastic book and `achieves its objectives', but Lloyd Clark needs to write a larger book on this subject having whetted our appetites.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! An excellent book about 6 Airborne Div in Normandy, 5 Mar 2004
By Sewell (Southern England) - See all my reviews
This book is long overdue. Although 6 Airborne Division's operation in Normandy have been covered by a number of authors in recent years, none have the clarity and breadth of this study. For far too long readers like myself have been trying to find a volume which covers more than the obvious - Pegasus Bridge for example - and this book provides it. Although Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Battery are well covered, so are less well known battles such as those at St Honorine, Longeuval and, crucially, Breville (a remarkable action). What is also so gratifying is the emphasis given to the German enemy - who they were, where they were and what they were doing. The book is, however, more than just a history, it doubles up as a battlefield tour guide and I for one can not wait to travel to Normandy and put it to the test - the maps, modern photographs and illustrations are all colour, glossy and first class. The contemporary images are also well chosen. This is an excellent volume, Clark really knows his stuff and how to explain complex actions - roll on the rest of the series!

5.0 out of 5 stars My father was a paratrooper in Normandy, 29 May 2004
By Toby (London) - See all my reviews
I bought this book for my father who fought as an officer with the airborne division in Normandy and he thought that it was wonderful. He said that Clark's narrative is extremely accurate and it brought back many memories of fighting around Benouville. We intend using the book as our guide when we visit the battle field in August. He has read other books on the division in Normandy, but he says that this is by far the best. He was there - he should know!
