This book offers some really useful insights in the difficulty of planning, launching a fighting airborne operations. It is, in a sense, a great shame that the book is not 400 pages long as the author seems to have so much more to say than he can in this relatively slim volume. However, that is not a criticism of this book as it sets out to be part hisotry and part battlefield tour, more a bravo to the author for bringing the fighting of 6th Airborne Division to life so well and making so many interesting (albeit too brief!) observations. The thing I particularly liked was the dispassionate approach to the subject - because there is criticism of the British and the Germans where necessary - something which seemed to be missing from the D-Day commemorations recently (but understandably). So, this is a fantastic book and `achieves its objectives', but Lloyd Clark needs to write a larger book on this subject having whetted our appetites.

This book is long overdue. Although 6 Airborne Division's operation in Normandy have been covered by a number of authors in recent years, none have the clarity and breadth of this study. For far too long readers like myself have been trying to find a volume which covers more than the obvious - Pegasus Bridge for example - and this book provides it. Although Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Battery are well covered, so are less well known battles such as those at St Honorine, Longeuval and, crucially, Breville (a remarkable action). What is also so gratifying is the emphasis given to the German enemy - who they were, where they were and what they were doing. The book is, however, more than just a history, it doubles up as a battlefield tour guide and I for one can not wait to travel to Normandy and put it to the test - the maps, modern photographs and illustrations are all colour, glossy and first class. The contemporary images are also well chosen. This is an excellent volume, Clark really knows his stuff and how to explain complex actions - roll on the rest of the series!

The Allied left flank was a critical area of the invasion front and, of course, although the work of the 6 Aiborne Division in securing the area after a week of fighting was central, there were other troops involved including 51st Division and 1st Special Service Brigade. The beauty of this book, even though it is quite rightly centred around the airborne actions, is that the other units and their battles are well represented. The text is admirably clear considering the complexity of the fighting and the analysis is extremely helpful. The maps support the text extremely well, critical for a book which is part history and part battlefield tour, but I would recommend this volume for both the armchair military historian, the general reader or those wishing to go on a battlefield tour. A very fine read.
