Book Description

It is the distant future and one man, Jonas Valent, is letting his life slip by. He is employed by Freeground station as a port traffic controller, a job he took after completing a tour in the military. His only real joy in life is his participation in true-to-life military simulations with a cadre of friends who come together regularly to defeat challenges made to test the brightest military cadets and officers alike. These restricted scenarios stand as an addictive preoccupation that is so enticing that they ignore the potential repercussions of breaking in to participate.

When someone betrays their identities to the Freeground Fleet Admiralty, Jonas and his friends are faced with a far greater challenge: to venture out into the more populated regions of the galaxy to acquire technology and knowledge. They are tasked with laying the groundwork for the Freeground Nation in their efforts to reconnect with the rest of humanity, and to secure the armaments they might need to defend themselves from encroaching enemies.

Spinward Fringe Broadcast 0: Origins is a collected trilogy that chronicles the early adventures of an ambitious crew. Their leader, Jonas Valent, has the least to lose and everything to gain as he tells the tale of his first tour as Captain of a ship tasked with making allies and discovering new technologies for the good of his people. This simple mission becomes more complicated as the crew ventures further into the settled fringes of the galaxy.

This trilogy spawned the best selling Spinward Fringe eBook series. This is where it all began, when one man was challenged to aspire for more than an idle life.

A Space Opera Adventure enjoyed across the globe by all ages.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent sci-fi 24 Dec. 2010
Format:Kindle Edition
I picked this book up from smashwords dot com for no price at all.

I was looking for something to start my kindle reading and while searching found this book, and thought I would give it a try.

Have to say I am very glad that I did. The book is the first in a series of books under the title spinward fringe, each one represented by a different broadcast number.

I thought the book was very well written, the story kept me interested, and the building of the characters done to a good extent, such that I am still worried about the safety of one of the pilots who may or may not have survived.

Only way to find out is to purchase the rest of the series, and I fully intend to do that over the coming months.

If your into your sci-fi, don't mind getting into what could be a series of books that will be difficult to put down, then go for it, I am very glad that I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure escapism 11 Mar. 2011
By Hemzy
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have no experience at writing book reviews but I have several friends who enjoy reading as much as I do and we often talk about our latest good reads. This is a book I will be happy to recommend to them, or at least those friends who like a bit of sci-fi.
I have one simple yardstick; did I enjoy the story?
In the case of "Origins", the answer was "Yes, I did". I enjoyed it sufficiently to order the next instalment for my Kindle.
Or should I say, instalments? The marketing is very astute. The first book is free, the second is actually two books for the price of the third.
I found myself easily drawn into the storyline and am actively looking forward to the following episodes.
It's by no means cutting edge literature but it is pure escapism and I like books which can give me that. You can't beat a good story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Read! 2 April 2012
By Lucky7
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I dont really write reviews but this book made me want to share my opinion.

The book may start off a bit slow to begin with because its just setting the scene but once it gets going i couldnt put it down. Absolutely brilliant read, i really enjoyed it, i liked the character development and i grew attached to many of them. Once the story ended i was disappointed because it left me WANTING MORE! i have downloaded the next 6 instalments of this series and managed to read Resurrection in a day!

i really like the way Randolph Lalonde has wrote this series and i cant get enough of it!

The first book origins was free and should definately get you hooked! =)

4.0 out of 5 stars Opportunity missed 19 Sept. 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Well I really enjoyed this book, it captured much of my imagination, as I would want it written, the constant improvements in the ship, new technology and most of the combat scenes were most enjoyable. I liked the way the relationships develop and especially liked the mmo aspect that brought the main characters together.

Didn't really think the last part of the book was necessary and I think some areas of the plot were overlooked, but perhaps those areas are coming in later books.

I found the book started slowing down a bit between 79-89% on my kindle, but still a good read.

Some very minor mistakes in grammar, and some annoying first person multiple roles. While I like the idea of trying to write both the first person hero and first person enemy in the first person, I do think it's a bit confusing. Found some of the chat confusing as I had to really try and follow who was saying what and it was pages back that the reader is given a clue.

On the whole a good read, I look forward to book two maybe, just the ending of the first book put me off a little and ordinarily if I had not enjoyed the read as much as I have I would stop there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the price of admission! 8 Mar. 2011
By Phil
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It shows either how confident or how desperate for exposure an author is giving away their work for free. In the case of Origins I think it is, thankfully, the former. It's no masterpiece - Banks, Hamilton and the other good sci-fi authors won't be getting worried just yet - but we have an extremely readable yarn all the same. I'd probably class it as pulp-sci-fi, easily readable on the beach or commute with a fast paced and engaging story, but not really that deep. The characters aren't especially well filled out, and the author owes a debt of gratitude to numerous TV shows and films (as well as X-box live I suspect for the back story on how the heroes came together). However, I really don't want to sound overly critical as I did really enjoy this book, and have purchased the next in the series - maybe this model of selling ebooks will really work, but it has to be a decent opening to entice the reader in, something this author has undoubtedly succeeded in.

4.0 out of 5 stars First time reviewer... 23 Mar. 2011
By kj
Format:Kindle Edition
I ordered this as free and it's sat on my Kindle for a couple of months before I got round to reading it - not because of the quality of the novel, more to do with my nubie enthusiasm for downloading everything I can get my hands on. I have to say I have been pleasantly surpised, the characters are engaging, the scenarios are exciting and as a commuter I'm really happy to escape for a couple of hours a day into a world that suspends my disbelief :-)

Anyway, if you still have a sense of wonder, and a desire to escape, this is a great book and I'd encourage you to give it a go - the best bit being that there's a whole new world out there to explore in the author's subsequent missives. Needless to say, I'm on book No. 2 at the moment and enjoying every minute.

PS, Thanks Amazon, along with my passport and my visa, my Kindle is now an essential piece of kit to take everywhere with me :-)
