I was a Mormon for 30 years so I feel I know what I'm
talking about.
Massive book detailing the struggles and shifting of power
within the early Mormon church. Mr. Quinn is a tireless
reseacher and an excellent writer. His book 'Early
Mormonism and the Magical World View' started me on my
own research which eventually led to my request to have
my membership records removed.
This book is very involved and I wouldn't recommend it for
someone who knows little about the religion.

Quinn justifies his reputation as a gifted and meticulous researcher with this, likely his master work. The author deals with a major paradox of the Mormon faith in tracing the evolution of the early community of believers to the current highly structured hierarchal organization. While I was quite impressed with the book, I do note that Quinn has a tendancy to interpret historical events in his own peculiar fashion, rigging the proportional importance of certain facts to his point of view and giving little indication that other, equally valid interpretations are also extent.
I would recommend the book to any serious student of Mormon history and sociology. Andrew Piereder

My wife and I were both LDS members, and in combination with what we were taught at church and temple services, Origins of Power sheds invaluable light onto the way the church operated in its beginning and how it operates today. Quinn's research and dedication to factual evidence (I've followed through on many of his sources), is no less than exciting and complete. I note that Quinn was excommunicated from the church, because of the sensitive, "unauthorized" information he (and many other authors) have brought forth concerning the origins of Mormon religious beliefs and practices. As a historical researcher, and once fond member of the church, I highly recommend Quinn's work to anyone interested in Mormon history, and who are fair minded and strong willed.

Base decisions on knowledge, not other people's opinions
I have heard many people's opinion of who should have been next in line after Joseph Smith's death; Sidney Rigdon, Joseph's son etc, but William Marks is a new one. Read more

Origins of Nonsense
Dr. Quinn is very skilled at presenting the form of history without the substance. An interesting exercise is to follow up on his references. Read more

Want an LDS reference/research book? "This is the Place".
For the student of Mormon history, the book sure is packed with lots of interesting material. Although Quinn could have possibly presented it in a little more pleasant narrative. Read more
