Michael Chapman is unlikely to have many casual surfers reviewing these products. More likely that you have heard of him and may have some of his music already, or vinyl albums - like me - from the good old days.
So what you really need to know is that this double CD contains these albums IN FULL;
Disc One: Deal Gone Down (1974) (10 tracks) and Savage Amusement (1976) (9 tracks)
Disc Two: The Man Who Hated Mornings (1977) (10 tracks) and then 11 tracks of "Outtakes and Demos" of which 6 are demos or earlier versions of tracks already featured (and 5 are not). These tracks are perfectly good too, although tending to be Chapman on his own.
This is the kind of re-issue that makes you almost consider forgiving the average record label marketing exec!
The sound is fine - the albums have definitely been remastered, not manipluated to blow your socks off but certainly sounding upgraded and clear as a bell, within the context of the original mixes. Thank-you Denis Blackham of Skye Mastering. There are even some interesting sleeve notes by one Marc Higgins.
For me this was a big treat, a huge success. I was guessing which albums were featured, squeezing the tired ol' memory cells trying to recognise titles from the unavailable-till-now Savage Amusement. (I hadn't recognised the zoomed-in head shot on the new cover's art gallery wall from Savage Amusement's cover). It is decades since I last listened to that album (my vinyl is in storage) and I had a strong recollection that it was a fine album. It is! It's a brilliant album! I am delighted to have ready access to it again. Crocky Hill Disaster and Stranger are stand-outs. I was relieved that all these albums sound more upbeat and featured more varied arrangements than my only other Chapman CD "The Best Of....1969-1971" which is all from an earlier more accoustic folk-y era.
The second great treat here is the other two albums - previously completely unknown to me. They are both very tasty indeed, imho. Both discs are peppered with great songs I haven't heard before.
So if you're in the market for checking out more of Michael Chapman's music, or even taking the plunge and trying something new, this double CD is terrific value. No regrets. Nice one Snapper, nice one Michael. Great to have Savage Amusement back, especially bracketed by the one before and the one after.
