Mike Cherry has a lifetime's experience as a clog and step dancer, having danced with the seminal Reading Step and Traditional Dance Group from 1966 until their demise, and having learned from such dancers as Johnson Ellwood and Sam Bell.
This book is a culmination of all those years of experience and performance. There are excellent sections on how to practise, basic movements and music; however the book really comes into its own when dealing with the descriptions of individual routines.
Mike Cherry has the advantage of having learned from traditional performers and having danced the steps over a period of many years. What is presented here, perhaps for the first time in a clog and step dance context, is the repertoire of a 'modern' performer. In many cases, the routines have been honed by Mike to fit his style and the requirements of his audience. And he tells us how and why the dance is now as it is. The mix is eclectic; a version of the morris jig 'Shepherd's Hey', developed for performance; a pedestal clog dance performed on a big drum; and, importantly, the repertoire of Sam Bell, a traditional clog dancer from Linton in Northumberland, There is even a notation for a Welsh Duet.
Overall the notations are excellent. The keys are clear and concise, and the difficulties often occasioned in attempting to describe rhythm are overcome by the simple expedient of providing both verbal and musical notations.
The book is a paperback, well printed and with clear colour photographs. Trafford Publishing works with self-publishing authors and the results they produce are first class.
This is an excellent book, which should find a place in the bookshelf of every clog and step dancer and many others besides.
