Book Description

1 Dec 1995
"IT'LL MAKE FOR SOME MIGHTY FINE EATING."
--Fort Worth Star Telegram
After the tremendous success of her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and the beloved movie that followed, author Fannie Flagg received thousands of requests from all over the world asking for recipes from the little cafe of her Alabama childhood that was the model for the cafe in her novel. Now, she joyfully shares those recipes, in what may well be the first cookbook ever written by a satisfied customer rather than a cook! Inside you'll find wonderful recipes for:
* Skinless Fried Chicken * Pork Chops with Apples and Sweet Potatoes * Baked Ham and Pineapple Rings * Baked Turkey with Traditional Cornbread Dressing * Black-eyed Peas * Fried Okra * Creamed Onions * Broccoli Casserole * Southern Cream Gravy * Fried Catfish * Scalloped Oysters * Down Home Crab Cakes * Beaten Biscuits * Corn Pones * Lemon Ice Box Pie * Kentucky Bourbon Chocolate Pecan Pie * And much more!
The recipes in Fannie Flagg's Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook are all for delicious hearty happy food that comes with all sorts of things, from gravies to hot sauces (very often the secret's in the sauce). But most of all this food, and this book, comes with love.
"If you liked her novel, Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe, and if you liked the movie they made from that novel, you'll like this cookbook....It's funny, just like Flagg."
--Richmond Times-Dispatch
"Recommended...All the traditional dishes are here, along with the author's irreverent, irresistible commentary on Southern cooking and culture."
--Library Journal

4.0 out of 5 stars Cookbook has same flare as novels 27 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you enjoyed reading(or watching) Fannie Flagg's "Fired Green Tomatoes", you'll love the cookbook as well. She shares her love for food and the past by giving us recipes from her Aunt's railroad-side restaurant(the original Whistle Stop Cafe), as well as lines from the book FGT. I've tried the BBQ chicken, mashed potatoes, glazed carrots, and egg custard pie all to family satisfaction. So whether you like Southern cooking or Fannie Flagg, get this book. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Original Whistle Stop Cafe Cookbook 2 Oct 2009
By Lucy Reynolds VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a novelty rather than an actual cookbook. Being a long-time fan of Fannie Flagg, and with the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe being one of my all time favourites, I bought this out of dedication than need.
Rather than being a simple reciple book, Flagg has scattered it with quotations from the original book, and written it in the same gossipy tone. It's quite a read, and is almost like opening a menu from the Whistle Stop Cafe.

Some of the recipes sound delicious - Barbecue Chicken, Lemon Ice Box Pie, Red Velvet Cake... so it wasn't long before I decided to get busy in the kitchen.
I decided to make the Barbecue sauce, and beaten biscuits. Having spent a lot of time in Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, I often crave after those wonderfully fluffy, warm savoury scone-type-breads known as biscuits that are served everywhere in the states. However, I was a bit disappointed. After following the recipe to the letter, the biscuits turned out somewhere between a cobbler and a pastry.
The barbecue sauce recipe called for a thickly sliced lemon to be boiled up with the rest of the sauce, and removed at the end of cooking. This was unnecessary. The ingredients also asked for cider vinegar, so the result was an extremely sharp and very watery sauce which didn't taste anything like or look like barbecue. However, adding a big spoonful of molasses brought it back to the flavour, and using a little cornflour thickened it to the desired consistency.

So, I maintain that this is a novelty book and not an actual cookbook to be taken seriously!

3.0 out of 5 stars Authentic 25 Aug 2012
By Coco
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book after having seen and enjoyed the movie. I expected it to be full of simple easy to cook dishes, like in a railway cafe. However, some of the recipes are too complicated even for home. I have since given to another friend who has more time!

high fat, high calorie food made with chemicals, this is for you!
I can see that you could adapt the recipes to make them healthier, yet I do detest the American way of adding garlic powder, pudding mix, etc. Give me real ingredients!
English food is far superior to yukky, chemical food!
