Product Description

This latest re-issue from the "Original" series was the title which saw the series branching out into motorcycles, starting with the most desirable of classic British motorbikes: the Vincent. Covering all post-1945 versions - the twin cylinder 1000cc Series B, C and D Rapides, the incredibly fast and sought-after Black Shadow, the Black Knight and Black Prince, and the 500cc Meteor and Comet singles - the book offers the same detail and excellent full colour photography that is found in the rest of the series.

About the Author

Author Dr. Bickerstaff is a leading light in the Vincent Motorcycle Owner's Club and an acknowledged authority on the subject. She has restored and regularly rides the Vincent Rapide series B bought by her father when new.

Superb book - and the quality of the Herridge edition is as good as the original Bay View Books edition. The author is a long-standing Vincent owner and expert, and a leading light in the Vincent Owner's Club. She has made full use of her contacts to produce an excellent publication.

The book spends ten pages on the Series A models to give some background to the book's major subject, the post-war Series B, C and D Vincent-HRD twins and singles. As it says on the cover, it's a restorer's guide, carefully listing original equipment (giving component manufacturer and part numbers in many instances), finish and accessories, fixtures and fittings - right down to the toolkit! It is not a history of these machines, although a lot of factory history is obviously included to explain why certain modifications were made, but is well worth reading whether you have a Vincent in the garage waiting for restoration or are just simply interested in these motorcycles.

Precise and accurate text covers every detail of these machines, backed up by superb photos of various models, restored and unrestored. Original finish is minutely described, with clear photographs of tank transfers and gold lining. Invaluable appendices cover engine and frame numbering, production modifications, common screw threads found on Vincents. I haven't found a mistake yet!

A section on buying Vincents is also included to show the sort of thing that the unwary buyer can be presented with.

Highly recommended for anyone - and essential reading for the Vincent owner.

Excellent book Jacqueline Bickerstaff has researched her subject well. Along with being the Technical Officer for the Vincent Owners Club JB has practical experience of owning and running this marque. There is a chronology of events with model and machine serial numbers listed which is most useful. With some great photos of the C Series Black Shadow pages 52 to 57. Along with write ups on the classic Vincent Meteor and Comet single cylinder range a very useful guide. A must buy if you are contemplating purchasing a Vincent motorcyle.
Recommended.

even a girl knows a good bike 14 Sep 2000

not many "marques" stir the the blood of both the dedicated enthusiast, and the casual motorcycle fan like VINCENT. if a picture is worth a thousand words, then the text of jackie bickerstaff is well matched to the excellent photographs of these wonderful machines, done by asisstant mann.it is not easy to write about the many technical differances from one model to another, without loosing the reader's attention:but she did it!!! highlight of the book realy is the picture of the author next to her vincent

Best source of accurate information on Vincent motorcycles - ever. 26 Aug 2008
By Bill Miller - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
When you're working with, or on, a low production volume motorcycle, made at a time when it was a tool not an object of art, finding reliable, accurate technical information can be difficult. Records weren't kept in the 40's and 50's with an eye to the future restorers so many details have been lost or damaged. It took someone like J.P. Bickerstaff (a highly qualified engineer by profession) who knows and loves the motorcycle, to ferret out the details of these machines from such sources as still remain. I have at least six other books on Vincents and consider the Original Vincent Motorcycle to be the absolute best source for restoring, or for verifying details of one you might consider for purchase.
