Not heard of The Ruts? They are the great lost band of the late 70's / early 80's. They exploded onto the tail end of the punk scene and simply wiped the floor with nearly everyone else. They had the energy of the Sex Pistols, the musical range of The Clash and a set of songs any other band would kill for. All this potential was lost however when singer Malcolm Owen tragically died of a heroin overdose in the bath at his parents house. The band tried to carry on as The Ruts DC for a while but the momentum was lost, and with it went one of the best bands of a generation.
They left behind one full album (The Crack), a few none album singles and enough other material to release an extended EP (Grin & Bear It). All of The Ruts recorded tracks have been released many times in the years since, and this collection is either yet another chance to sell the same songs the fans all over again or a good way of introducing new listeners to some great music, depending on your point of view.
Whatever the motivation for releasing this compilation the simple reality is that the two CD's contain music that sounds just as vital, as fresh and as inspirational as it ever did. 10/10.
