Jethro Tull is one of those groups for whom I resist the notion of a greatest hits collection, probably because they had two albums ("Thick as a Brick" and "Passion Play") which were created as unfieid works. Even on "Aqualung" there is more thematic unit than you usually find on Rock albums, even when you are dealing with Progressive Rock, so "Original Masters" strikes me as strange as listening to one movement from a Mozart symphony. This collection covers some of Jethro Tull's best work from 1969-1975, and I would certainly agree with everybody else who has commented that the lineup could certainly be better given what is available. I would have gone for "Bouree," "Wondering Aloud" and the Marcus Purdy sequence from "Passion Play" instead of "Sweet Dream," "Witches Promise" and "Life's A Long Song." Ask me again tomorrow and I will probably have a different answer.
So if you are already an Ian Anderson enthusiast, then "Original Masters" will give you an urge to go listen to your favorite Jethro Tull albums again. If you are familiar with Jethro Tull mainly from what few songs received heavy AM radio play, then these songs may well whet your appetite for the group's more ambitious music. Now, if somebody could just explain to me how we come to live in a world where the music from "Thick As A Brick" is used to sell cars? Apparently the executives who Okayed that ad do not remember what is in the gutter when your love is in the sink. Amazing. Just remember to go check out the albums.

I like Jethro Tull. This is a good overview of their best songs. However Jethro Tull are really about making albums as a whole which just can't be replicated on a collection like this. Because I can't afford all their good albums there are enough songs on here to make it worth downloading the whole CD rather than just picking a few titles. The edited version of Thick as a Brick on here really doesn't work though.

As compilation albums go, 'Original Masters' does a solid job of introducing new listeners to the wonderful back catalogue of one of the best rock groups of the 1970s. The selections are pretty much what you would expect in that the group's early clutch of hits (which tended not to be included on studio albums) are included at the expense of much more interesting choices elsewhere. Even so, picking this LP up at a good second hand price should satisfy the curious punter and the overall standard is high enough in my book.

I bought Original Masters in 1988, in the Woolworths sale, purely because a hip friend had a copy. I guessed that if she liked them they had to be okay, and being born rather too late to be aware of Tull in their heyday I had only her recommendation to go on. She had fine taste - Original Masters is everything I wanted to hear at 18 - mysterious, ingenious, even a little romantic. It can easily be said to be a definitive guide.

Indeed, this isn't just any veteran rock group compilation. 'Original Masters' is ideal for converting anybody interested to being a Tully. It includes old favourites, differing in style and sound. Although I had most of the tracks on other CD's, it still proved a special programme and therefore convenient having the 'Masters' all on one album. Truly my money's worth!

Jethro tull are known for selling millions of albums but in the late 60s and early 70s they still shifted plenty of singles to enable them to get in the top 20 4 times , living in the past , sweet dream , witches promise, and an ep with the best known track being life's a long song, they are all,on here as well as as tracks off aqualung ,war child minstrel in the gallery, to old to rock n roll and songs from the wood, what a good starter for those who don't know tull, that well , can there be anyone who don't know what tull, are about, great album at this price .

This is the ideal album for those who like Jethro Tull of old but are not hardcore fans, it is great for the car too.
I have it on tape so know it well, it is one of the greats for driving to and singing along on a summers eve on the moors.
I have a lot of albums anyway and love Ian live, he is a mad genius with a flair for the old ways, I know many want other tracks but this is the fun side to enjoy
Worth it for those who like the past

This is a very good collection that includes the best of Jethro Tull and the only possible disappointment is that it leaves out a particular favourite of mine, Heavy Horses. Apart from that omission it is excellent.
