Woody Guthrie - My Dusty Road

Biography

Having lived through some of the most significant historic movements and events of the Twentieth-Century --the Great Depression, the Great Dust Storm, World War II, the social and the political upheavals resulting from Unionism, the Communist Party and the Cold War-- Woody absorbed it all to become a prolific writer whose songs, ballads, prose and poetry captured the plight of everyman. As good as it gets.... and that's the problem 21 Mar. 2015

First of all - five stars for the music. No debate there. Woody Guthrie is quite literally a national treasure.

Sadly, however, a really satisfying, broadly based document of his music has never been produced. There have been a number of excellent sets issued by Smithsonian Folkways (including the historic Folkways: The Original Vision and, more recently, the Woody at 100 boxed set). And, of course, there's his original landmark album, Dust Bowl Ballads, thankfully restored by RCA (though currently out-of-print). But nobody's ever put all the pieces together - and somebody really should.

This two-disc set - and similar packages such as The Ultimate Collection - is about as good as it gets. And, that's the problem. Among its 50 tracks you'll find most of Woody's best-loved songs. But, the tracks are taken from dubious sources of wildly varying quality, and they are published under Europe's loose public domain laws - meaning nobody associated with the Guthrie estate gets a dime. Perhaps even worse (facts, after all, are free), the tracks aren't annotated one bit. When did Woody write them? When did he record them? What label released them? These things matter, and his legacy demands it.

Having said that, for many collectors and students, 50 Woody Guthrie songs is plenty, and Original Folk contains 50 of the very best. (Among the notable omissions are "Vigilante Man," "This World Is Not My Home," "Hobo's Lullaby," and "Roll On Columbia," as well as famous compositions like "Bound For Glory" that he never recorded.) From that perspective, and for it's bargain price, I recommend it. It is certainly a great place to start. And for, essentially, much more of the same, seek out 100th Anniversary Collection, a five-disc, public domain boxed set from the same company that brought us The Ultimate Collection.

But, I wish there was a better choice, one that tells Woody's complete story in sufficient detail from start to finish - using the properly licensed, best possible source materials from the copyright holders. Guthrie was a patriot, a radical, a father, a rambler, and a genuine, passionate, eccentric original. He deserves better.
