Hello. Ok, first a confession...I guess you could say that I'm one of those slightly (ahem) obsessive Tom Waits fans that you've no doubt heard about...however, I'd still like to try and write something useful for you...assuming you are a newcomer.
Well, these are his first five albums (presented in cardboard sleeves inside a flip-top box). A great place to start as there are many, many wonderful songs to be discovered here and, actually, IMHO there are at least two great albums in their own right - Small Change & Heart Of Saturday Night....though I would also add Nighthawks At The Diner, which he recorded live in the studio but set up like a live gig with a select group of friends & fans in attendance, you really get a feel for Tom's skill as a raconteur...very funny!
However, if what you've heard about him is the so-called clanking, grinding stuff then there isn't much of that style in evidence here...that period really gets going another few albums down the line with Swordfishtrombones (the album I started with many years ago and never looked back).
Sonically, these are much more "normal-sounding" albums...some jazz, some blues, a little country, a little west-coast folk, some nightclub singer-songwriter torch songs and many beautiful stories of lost souls and romantic outsiders dreaming of love & whiskey. Also, if you've heard of but are not sure whether you'll like his (in)famously "diesel-soaked" voice then these albums display a younger, lighter touch to his singing.
Incidentally, I've always felt that there are many elements that blend together to create the joyful noise of Tom Waits...his voice (though this can change dramatically depending on the character he's playing and the story they're telling), his lyrics (ranging from heartbreakingly tender to deliciously deranged but always entertaining), his timing, his humour, his very sweet piano & guitar playing and the fantastic musicians who back him.
So, to sum up, this set is a bargain. If you decide to buy it and you like what you hear then I strongly suggest buying Blue Valentine too...it has a similar feel to these and has many more stunning songs to get lost in.
Thanks.
