For the price this is an excellent collection of Rickie Lee's earliest (and generally her best) recordings, no matter that the cd's haven't been digitally enhanced or that there's no booklet with it - what do you expect for this price?! - although each cd comes in the original sleeve artwork. It contains her first 3 magnificent studio albums (RLJ, Pirates and The Magazine) which are worth the entry price alone. But, as a previous reviewer said, it also contains a bit of a rarity in Girl at Her Volcano, which was originally released as a 10" mini-lp or cassette, and was not widely available for all that long. It consists of studio and live performances, and contains her wonderful live version of My Funny Valentine, which is my personal favourite version of the song by anyone. Back in the day I had the cassette version of this but I lost it somewhere many years ago, so it's great to have it again - and this time on cd - even though, sadly, it does not include the cassette-only bonus track Something Cool, which was my favourite song on it (you can find it on the Duchess of Cool compilation). The other album Naked Songs is a live acoustic recording, which is fine, but just covers old ground. Taken as a total package, however, this is superb collection, whether for old fans like me or for people who might not yet know her music. (Incidentally, you can get it in Fopp for just £10 - like I did!).

'Pirates' is one of the top 5 albums of the 80s, 'Rickie Lee Jones' a fabulous debut, 'Girl at her Volcano' has been tough to acquire on CD or download, 'The Magazine' and 'Naked Songs' are only filler compared to the genius of the rest, and still rank above 98% of efforts by other female singer-songwriters. I would have paid the price of this pack just to own Rickie singing 'Rainbow Sleeves', which I haven't had since my cassette copy was chewed up. Buy this.

This 5cd set of the great Rickie Lee Jones is somewhat basic, and lacks the terrific job of presentation that Rhino used to do on most of it's reissues. All you get is a cheap cardboard box with the 5 albums inside. No new information, no lyrics, no photos. Moreover the cds have clearly not been remastered. That being said you do get 5 great albums for 15-00 pounds, including"Girl at her Volcano" which, as far as I know, has never been released on cd before-apart from 2 tracks on the 3cd "duchess of Coolsville" anthology. So, despite it's drawbacks, it gets 5 stars from me

The general public are usually familiar with "Chuck E's in Love" from her debut album. A track so popular it crossed over to to so many different audiences. I once even heard it played at an R & B party. That aside, Ms. Jones proves she is no one trick pony, showing she is capable of more depth in her debut album than most artists have in their whole career. The first four albums from this artist show creativity and all round fun with her craft. My personal favourite? Her second album "Pirates", though to be fair "The Magazine" also have moments of brilliance.

My tip? Buy this collection and also "Flying Cowboys" for the definitive Rickie Lee Jones experience!

This 5-pack of Rickie Lee Jones CDs, which includes her first four releases and a later live album, is an absurdly good value even though the discs are housed in very simple cardboard sleeves, and no additional booklets or liner notes whatsoever are included. (The sleeves are adorned with CD-sized reproductions of the original LP covers, so the print on the covers is microscopically small.) But NO MATTER. This is still a wonderful, wonderful deal, ESPECIALLY because the set includes a CD of Rickie Lee's obscure, delightful "covers" EP "Girl at Her Volcano". "Girl..." was, I believe, never before released on CD in the West; the only other option I'm aware of is to get it as a Japanese import CD, at the price of a king's ransom. The inclusion of "Girl at Her Volcano" alone more than justifies the purchase of this set, but the box also includes her spectacular first, self-titled album as well as the equally-impressive second outing, "Pirates". ...Oh, one last note: although it's often slagged by professional critics, I find Rickie Lee's third full-length album, "The Magazine", also included here, to be a fascinating, brilliant work. If it did nothing more than contain "Juke Box Fury", "It Must Be Love" and "The Real End", three of her very best songs, it would be well worth any Rickie Lee fan's time. Conclusion: do buy this box set, if only for "Girl at Her Volcano", but, if you're missing any of the other albums included here, this is, as we Americans say, a slam-dunk. Cheers...

having read the reviews I urge anyone who is considering picking this set up cos of its bargain price that they think again and instead go for the 3 cd set "Duchess of Coolsville" a great career overview of Rickie Lee Jones work. Not only are the selections almost (almost!) perfect but remastered in 2005, which is especially clear when hearing the songs from her first two magnificent albums. Also contains Rickie's worthy cover of "My funny valentine" - and it is only 3 quid more than this inferior release.

What a bargain. FIVE corking albums for the price of a shot or two of bourbon in your favourite smoky bar.The debut is absolutely wonderful and Pirates is only a whisker behind. Late night listening heaven. Get 'em now, it's later than you think!
