Back in the seventies,i all but gave up on country music.To my ears Nashville was churning out mainly pop sounds under the country banner.Two people rescued the music for me Ricky Skaggs,and Emmylou Harris.To be able to aquire the first five albums the lady recorded,for a very modest outlay,was something i jumped at.These albums represent Emmylou at her very best.All five albums were certified gold.ELITE HOTEL spent eight weeks at no.1 in the album charts.BLUE KENTUCKY GIRL stayed on the charts for 102 weeks.The voice as pure as it ever would be,coupled with many excellent song choices are evident throughout.Not only do you get all the early hits,but many lesser known masterpieces such as"Queen of the Silver Dollar","Wheels","Sin City","Satans Jewel Crown","Beneath Still Waters",and "Leaving Louisiana".These versions have never been bettered,and she clearly shows what respect,and integrity she has for country music.
The dissapointing aspect is the very flimsy packaging.You will also need brilliant eyesight to read the musicians named on each track.Why a major reissue like this ,could not have been better presented by the record company is beyond me.It is for the music this set gets it five stars.Absolutely outstanding.

Let me say from the outset that this is traditional country music. It's not cross-over, it's not fusion, it's the reall thing in all it's unadulterated glory. This might be too much for some but I absolutely love it. All the themes are there: grief, loss, heartbreak or just the realisation that being alive sometimes brings pain. Then there's Emmylou's voice, a voice that could melt a heart of granite. Overall this is a must for country fans, an opportunity to hear one of the greats in her early formative years.
On a more mundane level you're getting five really good albums for a pretty incredible price and that can't be bad.

I bought all these on vinyl when originally released. They cover the beginning of what became a remarkable career. She has an amazing voice, is arguably the First Lady of Country. The musicians and guest artists are like a Who's Who of Country, the songs cover a variety of styles and songwriters of distinction. Hope the next 5 albums are issued in a similar boxed set.

A Fine Addition to Any Collection

The Lovely Emmylou
The Old Ones are the Great Ones; pity she cannot produce albums like this anymore. One supposes that the waning of the Gram Parsons influence somewhat explains this situation.
