5.0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile collection of early Sanborn albums. 21 Aug 2011
By J. Mcdonald TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
This five disc set follows the same formula as the other volumes in the Original Album series - the discs are presented in cardboard facsimiles of the original album covers and contained in a slim cardboard slip case.
David Sanborn - if you don`t already know - is an alto saxophonist who has made his name and reputation playing jazz-rock; these discs constitute his first two solo albums and his fourth, fifth and sixth (the third was "Promise Me the Moon" 1977).
Sandborn is these days generally regarded as an exponent of "smooth jazz", but I`ve always had a higher regard for him than that labelling allows. I remember him as an avant-garde player, well versed in hard bop technique and the sensation he created when he appeared with the Gil Evans Orchestra in the early 70`s; this is no Kenny G. - Sanborn is a highly disciplined musician who has paid his dues in the serious jazz world and other musicians know it.
The albums here show his progression to the style - and formula - that made him successful." Taking Off" (1975) and "David Sanborn" (1976) are fairly typical jazz-rock albums of the time, with some tasteful backing vocals on a few tracks and an unobtrusive string section supporting his standard studio group. Sandborn is the main soloist throughout, even using subtle overdubbing with soprano sax in places. "Heart to Heart" (1978) and "Hideaway" (1980) are marginally more mellow in approach and present the saxophonist's lyric style; these are perfect albums to unwind with, but still have a good mix of more danceable and engaging tracks.

This collection is certainly good value for money. Sanborn's talents as a saxaphonist are highlighted in these albums with fantastic grooves and rhythms and that tone that is distinctly his. Treat yourself!

5.0 out of 5 stars From the Masters Collection 5 Jan 2014

I am a big fan of Sanborn. Classical Jazz performers don't rate him well enough, but I say as a musician and saxophonist, he has brought so much to so many genre. This collection has some of his classics and one or two Albums you might not have heard. I certainly hadn't. Still haven't got to see him live yet, but will before he goes. A must for the true fan and cheap at just under 10

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value 4 Feb 2012
For anyone who likes David Sanborn this is a no- Brainer..5 albums from the begining of David's career. The one thing that you realise about mr Sanborn is that although he has made 25 or so albums.... there is a consistency of quality throughout the years..His trademark sound cuts through and dominates everything.Sheer Joy.!
