This is a brilliant collection. I bought the Byrds box set in the 1990's containing all their best plus some excellent un released tracks but this box set contained every track off each of the five albums plus all the un released tracks which were on the 1990's box set as well as some new unreleased tracks which I'd never heard before. Duplication on my behalf maybe but it was worth every cent/dollar/pound.

Love the Byrds, love this set. What do we find here? Firstly, there is Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the hinge between the old Byrds and the new. Sweetheart has been regarded as a Masterpiece for a long time now, the Mother of Country Rock albums, inspite of its lukewarm reception at the time. As customary with the Byrds, there was strife, Gram Parsons' vocals were substituted by McGuinn's for contractual reasons (none other), and the band fell apart soon after. Like the other four, this album is the updated, augmented edition with the extra tracks, in this case the songs with the original Parsons vocals. The other four albums are four of the five offerings by the latterday Byrds - the least successful ones, critically and commercially, as the magnificent 'Untitled' is missing. None of these four are masterpieces, but they have grown on me since the dust of expectations settled. The latterday Byrds feature Clarence White - a guitarist with such a distinctive sound and technical prowess that the world of music was much the poorer when he was cut down by a drunken driver soon after the Byrds folded. Even the over-polished Byrdmaniax is suddenly fine. Yes, the choirs, strings and organs don't help, but the opening trio of Glory, Glory, Pale Blue and especially 'I trust' excite me very much. This is the new Byrds, with McGuinn dominating as he should, but with sufficient space for Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons to contribute songs and sing. McGuinn essentially withdrew as leader on 'Farther Along', which followed Byrdmaniax. I remember I regarded it as a breath of fresh air at the time. Now I find it a nice album, but without focus. Highlights, perhaps, were the pair of odes to women, Antique Sandy and Precious Kate.Read more ›

Most of the reviews below are irrelevant ... as they are referring to a different box set comprising the first five albums. Still, that's Amazon's poor atttitude when it comes matching reviews with the appropriate product. It used to be a problem just for remastered re-releases, etc., appearing with the old version ... now it's getting worse, as exemplified by this very release ... shame, shame, shame ....

Anyhow the Byrds next five albums after the first five, unfortunately, overlooking 'Untitled'. Still, good value my lucky people!

The seminal first 5 albums from the band that really got me into music. I have already owned all of these in various formats but this packaging at this price was impossible to miss. The music is fresh and exciting still. The styles and sophistication develop with each album. In my opinion "Notorious" is one of the best 3 albums ever. They were there at the beginning of folk-rock, raga-rock and country-rock. No other band were so innovative. Highlights - "Chimes of Freedom", "Eight Miles High", "Draft Morning" & "Lady Friend". An essential purchase.

Received wisdom has it that The Byrds’ best work was made before Roger McGuinn was the only remaining original member. There’s plenty here to suggest otherwise, especially if you have a liking for country tinged rock. Whilst some tracks are far stronger than others, my favourite Byrds songs lie on these albums and the (missing from this collection) ”Untitled”. This particular collection is a bargain: £14 for five albums, some of which are now available only at a premium price. Each album has its own facsimile of the original cover but there are no liner notes, as on the re-issues that came out in 2000. That’s no great loss as ultimately, it’s the music that matters.

A great package at an amazing price. The music is incredible as you would expect from this ground breaking and ever changing band. Would recommend this too anyone interested in this band or those like me replacing much used vinyl with added bonus tracks.

After all these years they are still quite unique, I prefer the original line up, Gene Clark was such an addition, as was the master, David Crosby. having said that, Clarence White was such a great guitarist, unfortuently taken from us, along with the afore mention Clark, too early! Ballad Of Easy Rider is my personal favourite, but what great value for money, 4 stars, and recommended.
