Format: Audio CD
Like most people - I came across this superlative American guitarist in a roundabout way - via The Brothers Johnson and their huge Funk/Soul hit of 1977 "Strawberry Letter No. 23" (which Shuggie Otis wrote). That track came off the "Freedom Flight" album from 1971. This new mini box set is the first time that three of those rare and fabulous Seventies LPs have been brought together in one place - and at a more than reasonable price too.

It breaks down as follows - released Monday 9 January 2012 in the UK and Europe (17 January 2012 in the USA) - "Original Album Classics" by SHUGGIE OTIS is a 3CD mini box set on Sony/Epic 88691901782 and contains the following three albums in single 5" card repro sleeves:

"Here Comes Shuggie Otis" - released February 1970 on Epic Records BN 26511 in the USA and April 1970 in the UK on CBS Records S 63996 (36:21 minutes)

3. Bootie Cooler
4. Knowing (That You Want Him)

"Freedom Flight" - released September 1971 in the USA on Epic Records E 30752 [produced by Johnny Otis - it had no UK release] (38:30 minutes)

2. Strawberry Letter 23
3. Sweet Thang
4. Me And My Woman

I bought this box on the strength of the Uncut magazine review of the re-release of "Inspiration Information". However, the previous 2 albums included here (recorded while Otis was still a teen lets not forget) are exemplary slices of funky soulful blues, and you can definitely hear where Prince took an idea or two from. Yes, "Inspiration Information" is a truly great, if rather brief work of soothing, questing soul music...part Stevie Wonder, Part Sly Stone, part Marvin Gaye, part Bill Withers. Its a delight, and tragic that his immense musical talents are not mentioned in the same breath as those aforementioned legends, as Otis is truly a man of immense talent and range, as well as being an understated but definite demon on the guitar. The 2 previous albums in this collection however have caught my ear unexpectedly and are full of stunning guitar work, funky soul grooves and excellent inspirational songs. Essential. This box set has made me happy.

Apparently the Rolling Stones wanted Shuggie to join the band but he turned it down, concerned about the commercial sound Stones were producing. A must for the feel the ambience of the 60's and 70's and 80's.

Got to be honest I'm a huge music fan with albums from all sorts of genres but for some reason I hadn't heard of Shuggie until I was listening to the Huey Morgan show late one night on radio 2 (good old Huey) this guys top notch kind of bluesy kind of soulful with a few unexpected twists along the way!

If your interested in Shuggie this is a great place to start as it's his first 3 albums which are all great, lots of people say their favourite is Inspiration Information but I really like Freedom Flight, anyway as I said if your interested this is a great place to start and a great price for 3 albums also

Shuggie was a true visionary who was utterly unappreciated at the time. On reflection his records are simply too schizophrenic but when they are good they are sublime. At least a third of this stuff is magical. The debut features some dreary blues and the other two can run away in flights of fantasy but cherry pick these albums and you could change your life.

Anyone who likes blues/rock will probably like this collection. I like it. But I've been keen on his music ever since I heard a track of his on 'The Guitar Album' - a compilation of the great guitarists.
