Johnny Cash - Out Among The Stars

Beginning his career as an outlaw to the Nashville establishment, Johnny Cash has come to define country music over the last 40 years. At first, his unique mix of hillbilly music with gospel and blues made him a perfect fit at Sam Phillips' Sun records, where he recorded such classics as "Folsom Prison Blues" and "I Walk The Line." From there, Johnny signed with ... Read more in Amazon's Johnny Cash Store

This package from Sony Music contains 3 very important albums released from 1969-71 on CBS: Hello, I'm Johnny Cash; The Johnny Cash Show (live) and
the album Man in Black.

Johnny Cash was at a very high point in his career at that time, after the great live albums from Folsom Prison and San Quentin, his marriage to June Carter and after having won (at least temporarily) his battle against the drugs.

Among these three, my favorite album is "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". This is a very solid, well produced, well performed album in every way. This is Cash with no frills, no violins in the background, just that classic hard-driving rhythm from the Tennessee Three. All the songs are good, solid Cash-songs: trains (Southwind, I've got a thing about trains), loose women and the lure of women (The Devil to pay, See Ruby Fall, Blistered), unsung war-heroes (Route #1, Box 144), restlessness (Sing a travelling song), true love (If I were a carpenter), money (Wrinkled, crinkled, wadded dollar bill), God/devil (The Devil to pay, To beat the Devil, Jesus was a carpenter).

The live album (Johnny Cash Show) was released in 1970 on vinyl and cassette. Johnny was in great form on these tracks, and for those who had the original, this is a fine opportunity for renewed listening. My favorites: Sunday Morning Coming Down, Six Days on the Road, These Hands, I'm gonna try to be that way, Uncloudy day/no setting sun.

The Man in Black-album kind of stands apart. It's an album dedicated to faith, with Billy Graham participating on one of the tracks. But the contents are not entirely religious. It's a very deep-felt and spiritual album, with some very fine and poignant lyrics.

These 'Original Album Classics' are one of the best kept secrets from Sony's reissues dept. I struggled to find any real information on them, even on Sony's own website. I can't understand why; they're a fantastic way to pick up some real good bargains from a wide range of Rock, Soul, Jazz, Country and Blues. (For full list of artists in this series look in the comment section of the review by Mark Berry for the Isley Brothers.)

This is the 5 CD mini boxset with the remastered albums from 2002, which contains bonus tracks on all the albums. The CD's are in cardboard replica LP covers which reproduces the orginal artwork both front and back, packaged in a hardwearing slipcase. The tracklistings for all the albums on the back of the slipcase are fairly easy to read if you have good eyesight, if you don't it does say that you can download the full tracklisting from [...] When I looked though they had a number of the series listed but not this one but you can see tracklistings for each CD as part of Amazon's MP3 library. (Of course you could look up the tracklistings under the albums individually.)

Well, what do you get with this set? The five albums are:

1. The Fabulous Johnny Cash (12 tracks + 6 bonus tracks: originally released 1959)

2. Hymns by Johnny Cash (12 tracks + 1 bonus track: originially released 1959)

3. Songs of our Soil (12 tracks + 2 bonus tracks: originally released 1959)

4. Ride This Train (8 tracks + 4 bonus tracks: originally released 1960)

5. Orange Blossom Special (12 tracks + 3 bonus tracks: originally released 1965)

The albums themselves are great, (but I am a Johnny Cash fan!

Note - This review is specific to the 5 CD Columbia release, with Columbia logo in the top right corner and five album covers in a line along the bottom. ASIN B0013NPW2E. As is their habit Amazon have lumped reviews for this with the totally different Sony 3 disc set of completely different Cash albums.

This set brings together 5 classic Cash albums from his early days with the Columbia label, following his tenure with Sun records where he had made his name with records such as `Ring of Fire' and `I Walk the Line'.

The Fabulous Johnny Cash - This is the first album Johnny Cash recorded with Columbia, back in 1958. There is a sense here that he is brimming over with creativity and there isn't enough room on the album to fit it all in. He seems to want to try out all his ideas, and as such we have an album that gives snippets and foretastes of great, more unified and coherent albums that were to follow.

There are country songs, folk songs, songs full of humour, love songs, gospel songs, blues songs and story telling songs. All delivered in Cash's trademark off key bass baritone and with the Tennessee Two's sparse, yet effective chick-a-boom backing. It's a fine recording, and the start of an impressive journey as Cash released great album after great album over his 20 odd years with the label.

This 2002 re-issue comes with 6 bonus tracks.

Hymns By Johnny Cash - Previously unknown to me. Apparently this was the second album Cash recorded for Columbia. The reason for his move from Sun to Columbia had been Sun's refusal to allow him to record gospel songs, Columbia promised him the freedom to record the occasional gospel album, and this was the first fruit of that promise.
