Note: This review is for the five disc Orignal album classics set, ASIN B000UO7IME. Blue Columbia logo in top right hand corner, five miniature album covers along the bottom. NOT the three album set with three miniature album covers running down the right hand side. Amazon have cross posted the review inappropriately onto this product.

Collected here are five full Duke Ellington albums from the period 1953-1962. The five discs come in separate card slipcases which are reproductions of the original LP sleeves. All are collected into a sturdy large card slipcase. The albums have been beautifully remastered and sound amazing. There is also a wealth of extras on each disc for the real enthusiast. Some people disapprove of the cheap packaging, but frankly I think this is a well put together set, giving five original albums for the price of one. I've had a few of these Columbia collections now (the Thelonious Monk set was particularly good) and been very impressed. It is the music which is important, and that is superbly presented. For those who want more text and album credits, there is a web address on the outer case that provides full details.

These five albums find Ellington at the peak of his creative powers. After recording (and penning) many classics that defined the exuberant swing era (`It Don't mean a thing', `Take the A train', and far too many others to list here), The Duke entered the `50s in a more reflective mood. He used the relatively new album format to put together suites of classy sounding jazz. The longer format allowed him to stretch out his creative muscles to provide music which is still catchy but more complex and inventive than before.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value Classic Ellington 9 Aug 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Unlike a previous reviewer who gave nit-picking critisism of this boxed set (the music's quality being totally disregarded!)I am delighted with my purchase. All five discs are indeed classics and would cost much more individually in jewel cases, or any other packaging if bought as separate items. This is indeed the best of the Duke's 1950's Columbia recordings in a handy space-saving package. Full details of recording dates, personnel etc are available, so the small print on the CD sized original sleeve copies doesn't matter.
