Product Description

Audrey Niffenegger

'A brilliant book, one of the best I've read in a long time.'

Product Description

Dark themes of colonial misconduct, racial prejudice, and doomed love resonate throughout this novel, yet it is infused with characteristic humour and warmth. It opens in Malaysia during the 1950s Communist insurrection when a young Englishman, Christopher, falls in love with a Chinese girl. The book then moves to 1969 where Frances, Christopher's Eurasian teenage daughter, is seduced by a Chinese teacher twice her age and drawn into the Malay-Chinese race riots in Kuala Lumpur. The final part of the book travels to 1990s London: Frances' two mixed-race children live with their grandfather on a council estate, and embark on a quest to discover the truth behind their mother's death.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 25 May 2008
By J. Blythe (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Really enjoyed this second book by London born, now Beijing based, Susan Barker. As in her previous novel, several stories are told in parallel; although this time the stories are set in different times (from war-torn Malaysia to modern day Mile End). These stories are effectively woven together, as 'ghosts' of the past physically visit one main character, and the recalling of previous events are the 'ghosts' of the other protagonists. Look forward to seeing more work in the future from this great modern author.
