Product Description

Product Description

Are you looking for a hotel or BandB that serves organic food? Would you like to stay on a camp site and have an organic veg box delivered? Do you like to have organic food available in your holiday cottage? Do you want to spend your holiday on an organic farm? "Organic Places to Stay" gives you all the information you need for an 'organic holiday'. It includes features such as: small hotels, guest houses and BandBs, offering organic, local and sometimes home-grown produce; self-catering accommodation on organic farms, many Soil Association certified, where you can often buy the farm's produce or order local organic produce; and camp sites on organic farms. The majority of places use at least 50 per cent organic produce over the year; many offer a much higher percentage. Quite a few of them grow their own produce; some use wild or natural foods, and most will aim to use local produce, rather than imported food.

From the Author

Linda says:

"I had been (and still am) an organic vegetable box coordinator for some
years. One day about six years ago, I rang the Soil Association to ask if
they had any information about places to stay where organic produce was
used in the meals offered to guests. I thought they might have a list of
accommodation that they could put in the post. They didn't, and that set me
thinking. After some research, I concluded that either nobody was offering
organic food or, more realistically, that nobody thought it was relevant to
put it in their 'blurb'.

"I realised that maybe I could start putting the organic places I had found
onto a website. With the help of someone who had done a bit of work for my
husband, and by taking in students from the local ballet college to fund my
idea, I started to put the website together.
Unfortunately my helper had never set up a website before ,so I would say
to him that I would like this or that, and just hope he could figure out a
way to do it, which he always did. This is the reason the website has a
rather 'rustic' look, and doesn't look like any other website!

I had such a mental block about learning new things that I didn't start
using the Internet for about a year. Once I got the hang of it however, it
was like opening Pandora's Box. I found organic places all over the world,
and after a couple of years had printed off so many places (well over a
thousand), that I eventually realised I was never going to have time to
contact them all regarding being listed on the site. I concentrated on the
places I had found in the UK and Ireland.

Although more and more people are using the Internet to source holiday
accommodation, I know from running the website that they often want to have
a hard copy of the information as well, which is why I have compiled
Organic Places to Stay.

I still get a buzz out of finding a new 'organic' place to stay. I love
contacting people and telling them about what I'm doing and finding that
they are happy to know that someone has gone to the trouble of putting all
these like-minded people together on a website. It's also fascinating to be
contacted by people, from countries all over the world, asking if their
accommodation can be listed on the site."

Linda is married with three grown up children and has lived in Guiseley,
West Yorkshire all her life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never leave home without it!, 9 Jul 2007
By Rob Elliott "book junkie" (Herefordshire, England) - See all my reviews
Linda Moss has already done an excellent job with her Organic Places to Stay website, but how useful to have all this information in a book that you can just take with you on your travels. For those of us who actually care about what we eat, the book is indispensable, highlighting as it does all those accommodation providers who also care. How comforting to know that one passionate person has compiled an accommodation guide that you can trust - a true breath of fresh air after the woefully inadequate and quite frankly misleading Tourism Diamonds system of accreditation. With this guide, you know that you will find real food served by real people in some of the best places to stay.

5.0 out of 5 stars True responsibel travel, 31 Jul 2007
By Peter Shield "editor-naturalchoices.co.uk" (Languedoc- France) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Hotels, B&Bs, holiday homes and campsites, Linda Moss has gathered an extensive range of organic orientated holiday accommodation across the UK in this superb guide from Green Books.

The beauty of the British Isles is often forgotten amidst the carbon costly glamour of palm tree shaded coral sand beaches and mega amusement parks that infest TV travel shows. Responsible travel companies keep telling us that it is fine to jet off round the world as long as we offset the carbon generated. However the most responsible holidays you could ever have are on your door step. A walking or a cycle tour through Cornwall or the Lake District, will not only good for your health and your head, but support the local economy, and if you stay in one of the many places suggested by Linda Moss you are guaranteed local and organic fair as well as accommodation in some of the most beautiful and environmentally sympathetic houses and farms in the UK.

If you have ever wondered which part of the UK is the most organic orientated one glance at the maps showing organic places to stay will answer that, Wales and everywhere east of the line between Bathand Portland Bill are awash with organic guest houses, hotels, holiday homes and camping sites.

From Shortlands organic farm and camping in the heart of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park to Soil Association certified Tregoddick B&B and restaurant in Penzance the wide range of quality organic accommodation that Linda Moss has found in the West means that a walking holiday if planned well is perfectly possible.

In other parts of the country while the density may not be so intense the quality of accommodation means that long weekends and week long one centre based holidays are more than possible. You can want to watch seals and otters swimming in Vaila Sound from your bedroom windows by staying at Burrastow House on the west coast of the Shetlands, or bunk out at Courtyard Farm in Norfolk with its organic free range animal and 150 acres of wild flowers and 10 miles of walks- and that is just on the farm itself.

The book is well laid out and easy to use with its maps showing the rough location of each place along with a colour coded scheme to show exactly what type of accommodation is available. Each entry has a good quality photo of the buildings- or field as well as a description, contact details and where available website. It is clearly indicated if location is certified by the likes of the Soil Association or a member of WWOOF- the World-Wide Opportunities for Organic Farms.
