Product Description

Product Description

Organic Futures presents an overwhelming argument for replacing modern farming methods with organic techniques. Exploring the history, politics and practicalities of organic farming, Adrian Myers shows how the current techniques of agriculture and horticulture based on chemical fertilizers, which inevitably bring about the deterioration of soil life, cannot provide a long-term sustainable future for humankind. Organic Futures: Shows what we can learn from 4,000 years of sustainable organic agriculture in the Far East Explains how organic farming is different from conventional agriculture Demonstrates the damaging effects of conventional farming Discusses the importance of maintaining soil fertility Presents a vision of an organic future, including inspiring developments in both the West and the Third World.

About the Author

Adrian Myers practised organic farming for twenty years, running a mixed organic smallholding in the Shropshire borders. Today he runs an extensive organic garden and orchard at his farm near Shrewsbury. He has spent many years researching the subject of organic and sustainable farming

4.0 out of 5 stars Organic Farming - not just for hippies any longer, 11 Dec 2008
By Cal Varnson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Organic Futures: The Case for Organic Farming (Paperback)
The author makes a very compelling argument supporting the need for the agricultural industry to shift from conventional to organic farming and for the consumer to demand organic products on the grocers' shelves. If you are interested in obtaining a better understanding of organic farming, this is an excellent choice. I personnally have a renewed appreciation for farmers that focus on sustainability and believe this industry will become much more profitable as demand for its products will increase exponentially.

4.0 out of 5 stars clear, concise, readable, 15 May 2008
By Mr. D. - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Organic Futures: The Case for Organic Farming (Paperback)
I knew almost nothing about agriculture before picking up this book, but now I feel like I have a pretty firm grasp on the concepts and issues surrounding organic farming. The book delves into the basics of soil microbes, plant nutrition, the worldwide history of farming, the development of current "conventional" agricultural practices, the health and environmental impacts of ubiquitous pesticide use, genetic engineering, and other issues -- all the while synthesizing important concepts and arguments in a way that makes a convincing case for organic farming, as the title promises. The author has a very readable style that doesn't overwhelm with scientific jargon, but seems to be well-informed and based on excellent research and personal history with organic farming.
