If Jones would put some of his enthusiasm for chemistry into pedagogy, this might be a decent text. As is, it is rambling, incomplete and needlessly difficult because the author fails to give the necessary information in the text, or fails to organize it in a way that can be easily deciphered. The result is cryptic and often patronizing, as he frequently refers to problems as "hard," when a better introduction to the material would go a long way to making them a bit more manageable. While I understand that Organic Chemistry can be challenging, this is a too frequent excuse that comes up often when teaching the sciences. Such a claim would be more creditable if it didn't smack of pedagogical ineptitude. If your class uses this text, be prepared to find plenty of secondary instructional material.

Not a bad textbook for organic chemistry, but no way as good as J Clayden et al organic textbook.A very American textbook, possibly more suited to 1st year than later years of a UK undergraduate course in UK.

I'm a first year biochemistry student so I got this textbook to help with my organic chemistry work... What a great book! So far it's had everything I need in it, in enough detail, and all written in a very accessible way - it deals with all the jargon and there's no dumbing-down, but the style is quite informal which certainly makes it easier to read and get information from. It's the sort of textbook which makes want to keep on reading beyond the chapter you need just because it all sounds so interesting (or maybe I'm just weird?). There are some nice touches such as a little quote at the beginning of each chapter and loads of diagrams. There's a quite comprehensive glossary at the back, but apparently you have to get the Study Guide to get the answers to the problems. I'm not sure if this textbook would be suitable for people doing pure chemistry degrees though... I haven't got round to looking at the CD that comes with the book though, so I can't comment on that, but on the whole I definitely recommend this book, especially for biochemists (and students doing similar degrees) and people with a general interest in organic chemistry - actually, if you're still doing chemistry A/AS level, it contains all the organic stuff you need to know (obviously in more detail than you need) and might be worth getting if you're interested in the field and want to read on a bit.
