Book Description

25 Jan 1996 0534238327 978-0534238322 4th Revised edition
Widely and consistently praised as the most clearly written book on the market. Why? In John McMurry's words: I have been asked hundreds of times over the past ten years why I wrote this book. I wrote this book because I love writing. I get great pleasure and satisfaction from taking a complicated subject, turning it around until I see it clearly from a new angle, and then explaining it in simple words. I write to explain chemistry to students the way I wish it had been explained to me years ago. Through his lucid writing and ability to show the beauty and logic of organic chemistry, McMurry makes learning enjoyable for students. The highest compliment that can be given to a chemistry text applies to McMurry: it works! Mainstream in level, McMurry's coverage is concise yet doesn't omit any key topics. McMurry blends the traditional functional-group approach with a mechanistic approach. The primary approach, by functional group, begins with the simple and progresses to the more complex so that students who are not yet versed in the subtleties of mechanisms are first exposed to the what of chemistry before beginning to grapple with the why. Within this primary organization, the author places a heavy emphasis on explaining the fundamental mechanistic similarities. Currently in use at hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada, McMurry's ORGANIC CHEMISTRY is also an international bestseller from the United Kingdom to the Pacific Rim. To be sold to International, Secondary, and other customers. Includes new Organic Chemistry Online 2.0 CD-ROM.

4.0 out of 5 stars A helpful text for beginners. 12 Aug 2003
Format:Hardcover
McMurry's "Organic Chemistry" has been a very helpful text for my first year organic chemistry in my first degree. Even in the second year, it has been of help. The text and illustrations are also clear. The text in general is not too heavily worded, thus promoting easy reading and for reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Organic Chemistry - Int. Students Ed. 9 Nov 2009
Format:Hardcover
I am not an Organic Chemist, but a Physicist seeking to indulge his interest in all things scientific and technical. As a result I cannot comment on the content as regard to its relevance to any course or curriculum. I might only say that if colourful school text books like this had been available 55 years ago, my career might have been much different.

As a non specialist in this area I find the book written in a easily readable way, the parts covered by my reading so far have been a logical progression and have filled in many of the gaps in my understanding. The aspects of chemical bonding may be easier for me to understand with a background in Nuclear Physics, but the diagrams are good and the explanations are straight-forward with sacificing rigor.

In summary I am very pleased with my purchase, particularly at what I consider a bargain price. The book received was new and still shrink wrapped, and the delivery was exceeding quick.

3.0 out of 5 stars An excellent synopsis of a difficult subject. 15 Feb 2003
Format:Hardcover
McMurry's "Organic Chemistry" is easy to read and understand. However, at 1373 pages, it is very heavy.
