5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know to plan your organic garden, 16 Aug 2001
By A Customer
This was the first book I read focusing solely on organic gardening. In coming to buy such a text from Amazon the choice was somewhat overwhelming. I plumped for Geoff Hamilton's book because of my familiarity with, and love of, the layout of other Dorling Kindersley publications. I was not disappointed.

This large and bright book is interspersed with many photographs and illustrations making it a very easy and clear read. The text is divided into many invaluable sections overviewing the philosophy of organic gardening, information on soil types and means of improvement, pest and weed control, the ornamental, container, vegetable, fruit and herb gardens along with a range of gardening techniques and a gardening calender. Helpful step-by-step instructions and diagrams are provided for specific techniques along the way. Mr Hamilton tries to incorporate organic myths and legends alongside the results of his own rigorous experiments conducted over many years of organic gardening.

Since reading this book I have browsed through other works in the field (no pun intended!)and have not found information to be lacking here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent all round reference book, 9 July 2008
I have been using this book for 5 or 6 years and still refer to it regularly in my vegetable plot - hence it has become slightly damp and muddy. It provides lots of useful background information on soil conditions, fighting the endless insects and diseases, as well as individual sections on vegetables.
Its an ideal tool for a first-time veg gardener, as well as for those more experienced gardeners who like to experiment with new veg each year or try out different ways of keeping the insects at bay. Its also the clearest description that I've found for pruning fruit trees, which always seems to confuse me.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Primer for the Beginning Organic Grower, 29 Jan 2002
By "jfbeaumont" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Organic Garden Book (American Horticultural Society Practical Guides) (Paperback)
I was interested in growing as many vegetables as possible in our small plot. Mr. Hamilton's book told me how this could be done (through a three year crop rotation and double digging). The book also told me how to take better care of my ornamentals, set up a compost bin to feed my soil, take care of nasty insects organically, prune fruit trees & so much more. I consider this book to be my 'Garden Bible'. I read it often & always find new things that I have missed or not had the chance to apply. Filled with pictures and diagrams, this book is a must have for gardeners who don't know where to begin. Read it during the winter months & plan your dream garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oregon oranges?, 27 Sep 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Organic Garden Book (American Horticultural Society Practical Guides) (Paperback)
Who would have thought that I could grow oranges in Oregon? "that will never work!" , "your'e crazy". This was about as encouraging as it got.

Mr. Hamilton, thanks to you, I will be eating oranges this winter from my orange tree. The book is insightfull, and a wonderfull resource for the average gardener wanting to try something new with their plants. In addition to my oranges, I now have a wonderfull herb garden complete with purple basil, rosemary, and chives. All of which I can now identify with certain confidence thanks to the excellent photographs and visual resources. My tomato plants are providing enough fruit for all of my jealous neighbors, and the only hint I can give them is to buy the book, (seems obvious to me).

Thank you for the resource, I know I will apreciate even more this January when I am eating fresh oranges in Oregon!

Sincerely, Michael Bolz
