This recital gives us a selection of chorale preludes, principally the 'manualiter' items from Part 3 of the Clavier-Ubung, sandwiched between two meatier items. The opening Toccata in D minor is a lengthy 4-movement work normally performed on the harpsichord. The opening flourishes call for a flamboyant treatment and Leonhardt gives it just that! The remainder of the work seems rather routine in comparison. The concluding Prelude and Fugue in E minor is the one known as the 'Little' and will be familiar to most organists from their early lessons on the instrument. The chorale-based items include a little-performed fantasia on 'Christ lage in Todesbanden' as well as the popular highly-ornamented setting of 'Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier'. Whilst not an outstanding CD, the music sounds well. Indeed, one would not expect otherwise when the Alkmaar organ is featured and Leonhardt is the performer.
