1. Orpheus - 3rd Version 1940 - Various Performers
2. Klage Der Ariadne for Mezzo-soprano & Orchestra - 2nd Version 1940 - Various Performers

Product Description

This new release on Cpo presents Orffs versions of works by the Italian master of the early Baroque, written during the years 1923 to 1941 in which Orff called his years of apprenticeship with Monteverdi. It had not been his intention to produce a historical arrangement but to find his own style with reference to a masterpiece of the past.

Let me say from the start that this work, however attractive, seems destined to be attractive mainly to Orff completists!
We are told in the excellent notes that Orff felt a particular affinity with Monteverdi and that this led him between 1923 and 1941 to make several arrangements of three of the Italian masters works, two of which are presented here on the present disc. He later described this period as his "years of apprenticeship with Monteverdi", using his arrangements to develop his own musical style. And yes, they are interesting, but all they made me do was to return to the original works at the expense of the Orff arrangements!
Throughout the performances are excellent, with the solo singing and chorus being exemplary, as is the orchestral playing and the direction from Ulf Schirmer, I just can't see me listening to this disc instead of the originals!

A must have...if one knows the Monteverdi, he/she will find this crushingly stunning, original, well-performed, and a fine addition to one's classical library.
