Product Description

It's 06.30 on a wet Thursday morning in November. Outside, it's Croydon. But snuggled up inside one's warm duvet, it might as well be Hawaii. How to make these two worlds collide? And, more importantly, how to leave Hawaii behind and face the reality of East Croydon station? It's a tough one, one must confess. Now, at last, a reality-inducing answer is upon us, courtesy of those good old peeps at Oregon Scientific. Introducing the Sunrise Alarm Clock - a clock which simulates sunrise in your bedroom, in order to gently wake your body at the pre-designated time. Light-intensity can even be set to your own personal standards. So having been gently co-erced awake, the thinking is that one will be ready to face the challenges of the day, namely Croydon and all that entails. All of which sounds jolly well thought out to us.

Skeptical at first... 12 Oct 2010
Had read another review and was skeptical of this product. Was thinking of either getting this or the Philips one, but that was more expensive. Glad I settled for this. The product is bigger than I expected, but works perfectly. The clock screen is adjustable, having two levels of brightness. The lamp itself has different degree of brightness, which can be easily controlled by the user. The lamp is bright enough and can be used as a bedside table lamp. Waking up to the gradually (20 mins) increasing brightness and birds chirping (gradual increase too) (or alarm or radio) is really pleasing, unlike waking with a jolt of traditional alarm clocks. Lamp will remain on for an hour before it is turned off. One cool thing is being able to snooze even without hitting any buttons: just wave your hand above the sensor. Really impressed with the quality of the clock, and it looks really techy and cool. You can even set it to play one of four nature sounds to lull you to sleep (adjustable duration up to 2 hours).

I feel well qualified to review this item as I have previously owned two other wake up lamps from other manufacturers. The first was a Naf Naf lamp
Naf Naf LYS V3 Lamp With Digital Progressive Clock Radio - Silver
This was a gift, so not of my own choosing. It was horrible to use (not very intuitive) easy to knock over (not good first thing in the morning) and completely failed after just one year.
The next unit I purchased recently (although not from Amazon). It was easy to use and looked good, but after a week one of the plastic buttons fell off, so back to the shop it went.
I thought I would try the Oregon Scientific as I have owned previous products from this brand and they have proved reliable. This is therefore (hopefully) a case of third time lucky. Here's the low down:-

The good
The instructions easy to understand.
The buttons are well placed/logical.
I like the infra red feature - wave your hand in front of the clock to snooze.
The lamp quickly fades up/down when you switch it on/off... which has a nice classy feel.

The bad
There are only two brightness settings for the display... and the dimmest option is still quite bright.
The radio reception is not brilliant, but OK for a standard FM clock radio I suppose (NB. it is not a DAB radio).
I have the unit placed on a smooth surface (bedside cabinet)... when you push a button, the whole thing slides across the top... it really requires two hands to use.
The buttons feel a little cheap and plasticky.

The ugly
I have had to reset the unit twice as the light failed to come on. I do not yet trust this lamp enough to use it as my sole alarm clock.
It is nice to use in conjunction with another alarm clock though.

Having had a Philips wake up alarm clock, I wanted to buy a replacement after it went wrong, and after some deliberating, I decided on this. What a mistaka to maka! This has got to be the most expensively useless piece of junk ever. After 2 days the light started flashing randomly, and the only way to cure this was to reset the unit with the reset button and remove the light bulb then put the bulb back in. Then, on the third day the light started flashing bright again while the light was getting brighter during the alarm cycle, hardly a gentle wake up! The other main issue is that once the alarm has actually gone off, if you then switch it off and then switch it back on again, the following day it fails to go off at all despite the display saying its set to go off! Needless to say its on its way back to Amazon for a refund. If it worked properly it would be a great clock, but its just complete rubbish. AVOID!
