4.0 out of 5 stars In addition to the previous review and the product review., 12 Mar 2007
By Trace T (Rotherham UK) - See all my reviews
As you can see in the picture the globe rotates in two ways making it really easy to turn and navigate around.
I purchased it for my 5yr old, with the games and content geared for his appropriate age group but even my 19 year old found it fascinating to explore with. You can't switch age appropriate information on the fly, it can only be changed when you connect the smart pen to your computer.
The smart pen which works independently from the globe base, also works with the supplied posters of The Flags of the World and the Flags of the United Kingdom so you can touch on any flag for further information and anthem etc even if you choose to put the posters in another room.
The only thing I don't like about this globe is the point of the pen as it doesn't really have one, which takes a bit of getting used to. Touching small places accurately on the globe can be a little tricky.
You store the pen vertically at the back but I would have preferred it laid at the front.

After installing the drivers for the pen and connecting it with the USB cable to your PC, you have free access {once registered with supplied access code} to updateable content for a year, but you can extend your subscription after that, I have yet to find out how much this will be. Downloading content can take around 15 mins {8mb broadband} I believe it stores the data using flash memory within the Smartpen. It states that there are weekly updates but I found there were a month apart.
Having access to updated content like World News, currency and world leaders etc has got to be one of it's plus points.

I did feel the female voice coming from the base speaker sounded like she had a cold at first but got used to it.
Not sure if it is worth the current retail price at £90 {If only the brackets were more ridged then I might have said yes as it is only plastic and does wobble a bit after turning} but it's certainly better value than spending £80 on a globe with an American accent, no updateable features and only rotates, as are also available from alternative manufacturers!
Works straight from the box as batteries are included.
Overall a great item!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite christmas presents ever!, 30 Jan 2007
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
Im 14 years old and i got this globe for christmas and i love it!!!

I was soooo bad at geography i didnt even know where africa was and now about a month later i know where loads of countrys are and are beating most of my friends!!
My little cousin who's 4 also loves it and so do my parents and grandparents so its perfect for everyone!

it tells you so many different things including:
*Time
*currency
*Leader
*population
*language
*history
*weather
It even plays each countrys national anthem i found out i knew the American one but not our own!

You can also find the distance and flying time from one country to another or even from 1 place in in a certain country to another place in that same country Eg. Washington DC to New York, so its perfect to check before you go on holiday.

My favourite part is the games; where you have to find as many different countries, capitals, continents or citys as you can.
There's even a pull out draw so you can do local places in England, ireland, scotland and wales.

You can have the sound come from:
*The wireless pen
*The speaker
*or you can plug in headphones
You can also adjust the volume.

The thing that seperates it from all the other interactive globes is that its updateable! You just download the latest news and facts from the internet so you dont have to buy a new one every couple of years!

There's so much more i could say about it because its so brilliant but find out for yourself and go out and buy it!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but don't download updates!, 6 Feb 2009
By J. Batty (UK) - See all my reviews

Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars Educational:4.0 out of 5 stars
This is a great educational toy. We bought it for our Daughters 7th Christmas and it was fantastic......until we tried to download updates from the internet. We had problems installing the software and registering the product. When trying to download the updates the whole thing lost it's memory. Now it doesn't work at all. After conversations with Technical Support at Oregon, we've sent the unit back for repair / replacement.

Currently waiting for return, so will update this review when we get it back.
