Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of Great Britain CD-ROM is now in its fifth edition and features many new extras including 83 town centre plans, ten airport plans and more than 500 photos of places of interest. In addition there are five "fly-throughs" which turn the contours of an ordnance survey map into 3D images--admittedly they don't last long and you can't control how you move through them, but they are neat nonetheless.

There are also two quizzes. The Great Britain Topic Quiz has been augmented so that it covers eight topics including cities and towns, mountains and hills, places and people and countries. The Around Britain Quiz has you answering questions that make up a virtual journey from John o'Groats to Land's End in five minutes.

But it is the map coverage that will draw people into this CD-ROM. The whole of Britain is covered at 1:250,000 and there are "layers" you can add and subtract to overlay a whole range of mapping features from railways to the Meridian line and places of interest. In addition, the second CD contains 100 map extracts at 1:50,000 and 100 at 1:25,000 that cover popular areas like National Parks and are idea for walkers and cyclists. You have to install the second CD separately to get access to these, but there is no trouble in doing so. Printing is easily done from most map views. Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition is relatively inexpensive software that map lovers will enjoy. --Sandra Vogel

2.0 out of 5 stars Very pretty, but not much practical use, 11 Mar 2002

If you expected this to be a substitute for your Landranger or Explorer maps, think again.

It's okay for motorists I suppose, and quite easy to use and navigate around, but for walkers it is useless. The 100 extracts at 1:25000 cover such miniscule areas, that you wonder why they bothered.

For instance, what if you wanted to use the maps to do a walk in the Yorkshire Dales; the Three Peaks say? Er, no. 'Fraid not.

It would have been nice to be able to print out the relevant bits of an Explorer map and take them instead of folding the real thing into some new contortion, but this CDRom simply isn't suitable.

Not really sure who would benefit from it. Even motorists won't unless they have a PC in their car...

2.0 out of 5 stars OS Interactive Atlas fails to impress, 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition (CD-ROM)
If you think that by buying this software you will never have to buy another OS map - forget it. The claim that the "100 specially selected 1:25000 map extracts" are "ideal for walkers and cyclists" is clearly absurd when you realise that each one covers an area of around 6km.x 6km. Any cyclist would get from one side of the map to the other in under half an hour.
In a popular area like Snowdonia, the "extracts" cover less than 10% of the area covered by the Landranger 115 map.
The town plans are good as far as they go - but they don't go far enough. London, for example stops at Camden Town in the north and Clapham in the south.
The 1:250,000 map of Gt. Britain is an excellent motorists map, but you still get the feeling that it has been done better by other people.

1.0 out of 5 stars beware the * on the front cover, 28 Aug 2003
By
This review is from: Ordnance Survey Interactive Atlas of GB 5th Edition (CD-ROM)
This is the most pointless product I've ever wasted money on. The front cover states that it is 'ideal for walkers & cyclists' yet it does not detail public footpaths or bridle paths. The bitmaps are unuseable and the interface is clunky and non-standard for a windows product.

Spend the extra £20 & buy a product such as Anquet maps.
