Hope. Hardship. Cannibalism. I started this book after visiting the Donner Party Memorial in Nevada. I couldn't put it down. While it is an historical account, it is very compelling and an excellent portrayal of human strengths and weaknesses. I was fascinated and would recommend this book to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ordeal by hunger filled me with dread 2 April 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested or enjoys human interest stories. The tragedy of the Donner Party, which George Stewart unveils in this accurate and compelling novel, rivals anything put down by the likes of Krakauer or Junger, two of my favorite writers. The details of cannabalism are graphic and I would not reccomend this for children. As a side note. after you have read this book find the PBS broadcast of an Episode of "American Experience - The Donner Party," which is based on this novel and was one of the most frightening documentaries I have ever seen on any subject. Enjoy this book. Oh and bring a Snickers in case you get hungry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ordeal By Hunger 25 July 2011
Format:Paperback
I found this book gripping and extremely interesting. I grew up in California and spent many vacations in that area without really knowing about the Donner party in detail. This book is not for the faint hearted. It is very detailed and can be gruesome. It gives such an insight into the time period. A great read if you are interested in social history. I highly reccomend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ordeal by Hunger. Story of the Donner Party 9 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book was very good indeed, and also very sad to read of how these people suffered, but also the courage and stamina and hope with which they faced this ordeal.

I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in history, and in particular the history of the opening up of the West in the USA.
