Product Description

Featuring an all-star cast including Diana Quick, Elizabeth Hurley, Nigel Terry, Carmen De Sautoy. Kate Buffery and Frances Barber; and based on one of the great novels of West Indian literature; Orchid House is a gripping and at times breathtaking drama of thwarted passion, desire and colonialism in Dominica, directed by acclaimed independent director Horace Ové. Lally tells the story of all she has seen, raising the three white daughters of a formerly powerful but now impoverished family. Master has returned from war a broken man, chained to a curse from which there is no release. Nurtured and cared for by both his wife Madam, and Mamselle the children s tutor, the tides of change sweep and swirl around them, eating away at the once-solid rock of the white man s dominance and the all-powerful control of the church. When the three daughters, having left the island, reconvene to shore up what is left of their household, they find an island sultry with the sweat of toil, protest, unresolved passion, death and desire. Secrets that have lain suppressed too long are about to be exposed at the Orchid House.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought for a specific reason 6 Mar 2013

I only bought this because it was filmed on location on the island of Dominica, and my family and I were all extras in it. Scenery is great, and it's all very atmospheric, but I think you'd benefit from reading the book too. Elizabeth Hurley is not a main player, but is just the one who's now most famous. Several other very accomplished actors are in it though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our family history! 6 Jan 2013
Format:DVD
The Orchid House is from the book written by my wife's Great Aunt Phyllis Allfrey. My wife Lindy Allfrey helped with the filming and appears in a crowd scene. It's wonderful to have a DVD of this part of the family history.
