This four-disc set collects essentially all the composer's orchestral music that does not include voice. All the performances are solid ones; as always, one can argue for other single discs where a particular work perhaps comes off better than in this boxed set, but as boxed sets go this is a winner. For myself, the main value lies in what seems to me much better sounding recordings of the Schumann symphonic cycle by Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Dresden Staatskapelle. I had heard these performances on previously released discs and had found them quite muddy sounding. In this collection, for whatever reason, they sound clear and vibrant, and they now rank among my five favorite sets of the four symphonies - and the Overture, Scherzo and Finale is included to boot. Hans Vonk carries the ball through most but not all of the remaining compositions, and he carries it admirably. If you want to cut a wide swath across this composer's orchestral output, obtaining strong performances at a great price, this set is the one to get.
