A fun shopping memory game which encourages even very young children to learn the French words for some familiar, everyday items. Each player takes a shopping list, which shows pictures of various items alongside their names written in French. The item cards are laid out, face down, on the table, and players take it in turn to turn over a card, making sure all the other players see it. If it matches one of the items on their shopping list, the card is placed into their trolley. The winner is the first person to fill their trolley. Children should be encouraged to say aloud the French words as they turn the cards over. There is a pronunciation guide in the box, showing the items written in English and French, along with a simplified transliteration of the words, similar to the phonetic sytem but specifically devised to be easily interpreted by children. Very young children will need some help at first from parents or more advanced readers, but will soon learn how to say the words, and will become confident when saying them.The game can also be played without using the French words, and older children can try to identify the correct picture when a French word is read to them. The game obviously helps with literacy and basic French skills, but also gives children confidence when attempting a foreign language. It is made with sturdy, recycled board, and can be played by 2 to 4 players aged from 3 to 7.

This toy is excellent for teaching shopping, but I am not sure it would work without the help of a teacher. The items are shown in the singular - la banane for example - so a teacher is needed to explain how to say 'des bananes' etc. There is scope with a teacher to take it beyond the basic shopping - Qu'est-ce qu'il te faut? for example.

My 3 year old has asked to play this numerous times since he received it for Christmas and it's fantastic to hear him speaking in French! Again, am amazed at children's ability to remember information they are told just once because he has already started to use the French words in context!
