Product Description

Product Description

There are two versions of this magical, award winning game, which is designed to help children with basic maths skills in a fun way. In both versions, each player takes a cauldron board. The idea of the game is to be the first to fill your cauldron with enough magic ingredients to make a spell. In one version, the small spell ingredients cards are shuffled and placed picture side up in a pile. The bigger sum cards are spread face upwards on the table. The first player picks up an ingredient card and looks at the number on the reverse. They then have to search the sum cards for a sum which they think gives the same answer as the number on the small card. They can then rub the magic black ghost on the back of the sum card to see if it reveals the same number as that on the small card. If the numbers match, the player can add the small card, picture side up, to their cauldron. If the numbers don't match, the small card is returned to the bottom of the pile and the sum card is returned to the table. Play continues until one player has filled their cauldron with ten ingredient cards. The alternative version of the game is played in the same way, but the sum cards are placed in a pile, face up, while the small ingredient cards are spread, picture side down on the table. Players have to find the small card that correctly answers the sum they have picked from the pile, and rub the magic black ghost on the back of the sum card to check their answer. Children love the novelty of rubbing the magic ghost to reveal the answers, while learning to do simple addition, subtraction and multiplication sums. The game is made from durable thick card, which will withstand pleanty of handling.

Manufacturer's Description

Make maths fun with this award winning game from UK Manufacturer, Orchard Toys. 'Magic Cauldron' is an exciting and fun way for children to learn about adding and subtraction. With two different ways to play the game, and links to National Curriculum Key Stages 1 and 2 maths, 'Magic Cauldron' is a great way to support your child's learning whilst having fun. Bubbling cauldrons are filled with weird and wacky ingredients as the sums are solved. Begin the game by picking up an answer card and then find the sum to match it. Check to see if you're correct by rubbing the heat sensitive 'ghost' patch on the back of the sum card to reveal. If you're right, you can keep the magic ingredient in your cauldron. If you need to try again, put the ingredient back and wait for your next go. Suitable for children aged 5-9 years, it's a game which can be enjoyed by up to four players.

Orchard Toys Ltd is a well-established UK company who have been designing and manufacturing children's board games and jigsaws for over 30 years. Rigorously tested in schools and nurseries and made from durable recycled cardboard, every Orchard Toys product is designed to encourage children to communicate, share and play together. 4.0 out of 5 stars Great for number bonds 29 Nov 2005
By A Customer
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Excellent maths game for primary school children. Helps them to recognise the maths operators plus, minus, times and divide. But it is so much fun they don't realise that they are learning. Each player has a cauldron board and they choose ingredients to add to their potion. On the back of each ingredient card is a number, before they can add the ingredient to their potion they must find a sum card that makes that number. Once they have picked a sum card they have to warm up the heat sensitive pad on the back of the card to see the answer to the sum. If they are right then they can add the ingredient to their cauldron. For the first few games it can be quite frustrating for any adults playing, and the game can go on for a while (over an hour), so you sometimes need to agree to stop after a certain time or when you've all got say four ingredients.

Really clever numeracy game .
Younger children can use their memory to remember where the number are.
These are revealed by rubbing the surface of the cards which react to heat to reveal a number.
Older children can enjoy working out simple additions and substractions to find the numbers by playing with the other side of the cards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent fun educational game 7 Mar 2008
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game for my son who was very reluctant to do any maths with me.It is a fun way of learning, and he gained alot of confidence. I now use this game in my role as SEN teaching asssistant, you can group the cards into +, - and X and focus on that area. It can be used with other teaching aids to speed up the sums, and help gain confidence. A game for two can take 15 to 20 minutes.

This is such a good idea, my kids love the ghosts that you rub and they magically disappear to reveal the answers to sums! My daughter who is only 6 struggled with some of the sums, but my son who is 8 had no problem ...probably best suited for children somewhere inbetween. A good way to learn and have fun at the same time.

4.0 out of 5 stars good game but more suited to ages 5-6 16 Jan 2012
By David B
Durability: 4.0 out of 5 stars    Educational: 5.0 out of 5 stars    Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
As per other reviews this is an educational maths game but my son didn't really notice the learning as he was enjoying rubbing the magic cards which are heat sensitive and reveal the answers. My only comment would be that in my opinion this is more suited to ages 5-6. My son is 'average' maths level and is almost 6 and this is perfect level for him but I would suspect a child of 7 to 8 years would find this too easy - but obviously it depends on the child - I am just giving you a guide. Overall a good product and would recommend.

I bought this game for my niece. She was a little reluctant to engage in maths. With this game she didn't realise she was learning as she had so much fun. It takes a few attempts for the kids to get the hang of it but once they do the game speeds up and they learn quickly.
