The Orb featuring David Gilmour - The Making of Metallic Spheres

Biography

The Orb virtually invented the electronic genre known as ambient house, resurrecting slower, more soulful rhythms and providing a soundtrack for early-morning ravers once the clubs closed their doors. The group popularized the genre as well, by appearing on the British chart show Top of the Pops and hitting number one in the U.K. with the 1992 album U.F.Orb. Frontman Dr. Alex Paterson's ... Well, I've only been listening to this album for a day now and I already love it. Although its not the Orb's best album (a la U.F.Orb), it has some quality tracks on it e.g. the big beats of Ubiquity, the techno-ness of Asylum, the bounciness of Toxygene (which wasn't commisioned from Jean Michel Jarre, that was just a joke made by the band). Also, the album has an obvious oriental quality to it, which also helps me like it because I like parts of Chinese/Japanese music. If you're an Orb fan add it to your collection, if you haven't heard them try U.F.Orb or Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld first, and if you don't like them then...what are you reading this for? Buy and Bye.

As the feel of the artwork suggests, this is an attempt to return to the heyday of 'Adventures Beyond...' and 'UFOrb'. While it's competent and less ambient than the previous album, it lacks the melodic and harmonic pleasures of the first two albums. Basically - there are no good hooks or tunes, what we have here is complex layers of sound and lots of fiddly bits. The presence of Fehlmann and System 7 collaborators gives it a similar sound to later collaborations with the same people, which also suffer the problem of considerable length but not a lot going on melodically. Having said all that, this is not a bad album at all, it just fails to come anywhere close to the excellence of earlier work.

Superb set all round. I love the original album, and the extra remix disk is a perfect addition. Great value or money

This is Orb at their most inventive, with tracks like Asylum and Molten Love, which both have an eastern quality to them them, and the bouncy Toxygene. Probably their best yet.
