Book Description

16 Nov 2011
KYLE LORENZO is venturing on two journeys into the unknown: One to an enigmatic ocean planet floating somewhere in the infinite reaches of outer space; another exploring the nebulous recesses of the inner psyche. It is during the long and isolating interstellar journey that a physical relationship develops between himself and the ship’s physician, Kelly Takara. That part is easy. Understanding the reasons for avoiding the emotional commitment desired by Kelly is harder. So, too, is trying to penetrate the mind of Larry Melhaus, the mission’s brilliant and reclusive physicist—a failure of communication made exponentially more troublesome when the scientist’s disturbing behavior begins to threaten the crew. And while Kyle seeks a path to comprehending himself and Melhaus, the ship’s crew, led by their strong-willed commander, Bruce Thompson, try to fathom a planet where none of the precepts of science seem to apply. A world where every preconceived notion of what constitutes life must be re-examined and challenged. Looking inward. Looking outward. Two seemingly divergent journeys. Strange if they culminate at the same destination…

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful exploration of the galaxy--and the psyche 8 May 2012
By Carol - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm not a big science fiction reader myself, but this was an unexpected gem. The protagonist, Kyle Lorenzo, is a writer (possibly in the middle of a mid-life crisis) surrounded by scientists and technicians, each of whom are forced to deal with the unexpected trials of planetary exploration and scientific discovery, but perhaps more vividly, with the psychological trauma of encountering uncharted territory in close quarters. Tarulli masterfully engages in a study of the mind, as much as a study of the "farthest reaches of the galaxy." There are all the makings of a sci fi thriller, even of a dystopian one, but also all the thoughtful detailings and scrutinizing of a great cerebral and suspenseful literary novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Departure 22 May 2012
By Charlie Peart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
When I read the sample of the book, what immediately struck me is that this writer has a wry sense of humor and the book will be character driven. I was correct and having read the book, I was very pleased to discover a science fiction book that is not filled with robots and transformer type of characters, but is about humans and how we might react to a long space voyage, each other and the discovery of a new life form. This is a very well written book and the author does a great job of creating a group of engaging characters and a very imaginative scenario. I hope he continues to write other books, and I will look forward to reading them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quit Reading at the 55% Mark 21 Jan 2013
By Michael Gallagher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book has an interesting potential story and plot line, and I really tried to like it - with each click of the next page on my Kindle, I kept saying "it has to get better" to myself. Finally, at the 55% mark on my Kindle, I stopped reading it and deleted it.

What was the problem? It just plods along - the first 15% really has no narrative but an inside look at one of the characters, then we spend another 25% of the book with relationship building among the crew, and you really start to lose your train of thought. Just when you think there might be some action, we go back to more self-awareness and the dealings among the crew and their personalities and it just plods along and along.

I originally picked this up for free during a Kindle promotion and, as I type this review, the pricing has reverted to 99 cents. I'd give it a pass.
