Review

Highly recommended to anyone with an interest in old rhymes, or really in history generally ... a beautiful book (The Bookbag)

Product Description

This is a collection of the most well-known and best-loved nursery rhymes, along with some that may be less familiar. "Oranges and Lemons: Rhymes from Past Times" plugs into the memories and knowledge of our earliest years, recalling those rhymes and stories we always seem to have known, yet struggle to remember clearly. The book examines the history of the rhymes, how they have evolved through the centuries, and the controversies surrounding their origins. Looking at classic favourites such as "Humpty Dumpty", "Ring O' Roses" and "Georgie Porgie", "Oranges and Lemons" will put you back in touch with a time lost in hazy nostalgia, just on the edge of memory.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read 16 Oct 2013
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Karen Dolby has herein given us a selection of nursery rhymes, most you will know although not necessarily all of the verses, and some you may never have heard of before. Some of these pieces are quite well documented, we know when they first appeared, etc. Others however we know little about, as rhymes have been altered over the years, and also music has been added, which comes from a different country.

This makes an interesting read as the author tries to delve behind the rhymes, trying to see if it is possible to locate the origins of certain rhymes. In some cases you are given a few possible meanings for some of these rhymes, and also if they are known in other countries. Some of the supposed origins of a few of these rhymes are also debunked, as it is known that they came at a much later date.

This isn't a definitive study of nursery rhymes by any means, and to be honest no such book could ever be produced, as a lot would be invention. This has some lovely little illustrations throughout the text, has a list of contents, a bibliography, as well as an index of first lines, making it relatively easy to find what you are looking for. Admittedly this is more of a niche product, but it does make for some very interesting reading.

Very informative, learned a few new rhymes and lots of information as to where they may have originated.
The kind of book everyone wants to browse at some point... "I wonder where 'x' rhyme came from?"

Great book about nursery rhymes and their origins. Nicely designed and presented. I purchased as a gift for a friend for Christmas, and it was appreciated. I have to say I wanted to keep it for myself!!! LOVE IT!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time 13 Aug 2013

I was hoping for insight on each rhyme. Instead it was lots of 'it might mean this or it might mean that' without any real basis.

Gave up reading after two chapters

3.0 out of 5 stars useful but not very interesting 7 May 2013

It was good to have the words for so many nursery rhymes but the background for most of the rhymes was sketchy, at the very least.

This book is a brief introduction to nursery rhymes. The seriously interested would do better with a wider and deeper study.
