Book Description

Em Orange Is the New Black, Piper apresenta casos curiosos, perturbadores, comoventes e divertidos do dia a dia no presídio.

4.0 out of 5 stars A justice system in need of a fix 25 Oct. 2014
By gloria piper - Published on Amazon.com
Young, privileged, and hot for adventure, Kerman delivers a suitcase of money for a drug lord. But one episode in the underworld is enough, and she's happy to take up a life of responsibility that would make her parents proud.

Five years later, however, agents appear at her door and arrest her on drug charges. It's another four years before she's serving a 15-month sentence in a minimum-security prison for women. Though superior to other prisons, it's still a hard existence, made bearable by the support of her parents, her fiance, and her many friends.

Yes, she's lucky. Many of the inmates are serving long sentences for minor offenses. We get to know individuals as they welcome her with generosity, and she becomes part of the support system the inmates have formed to help them maintain their sanity. We find ourselves caring for these women of wide-ranging ages, cultural backgrounds, and races who reveal their failings and their ingenuity in coping with very little. We see needs that are not being addressed, whether in terms of crime prevention or rehabilitation. The majority of inmates come from disadvantaged backgrounds, and they will return to the same conditions, unequipped to rise above them.

Here is a story that goes beyond stereotypes. Kerman does not see violence, but she sees and endures humiliation, loneliness, and despair. We get a look at the three prisons she has to inhabit, and they are not pretty. I rejoice that once Kerman leaves prison, she works to improve the U. S. justice system.

While I found question marks where they didn't belong, some confusion over when Kerman committed her crime, and confusion over some of the terminology, these appeared minor beside the book's importance and high readability.

This memoir is both enlightening and gripping. You won't want to put it down.
3.0 out of 5 stars ... read the book because reviews said it was nothing like the tv series 4 Sept. 2014

I only read the book because reviews said it was nothing like the tv series: that is, life in prision for this young girl, without all the explicit sex. Actually, I enjoyed reading her personal story, her reflections, her views.

I liket it. Not as funny as the show, but somehow, deeper, more realistic. Very interesting to take a look a this world.
