4.0 out of 5 stars Great phone - easy to unlock and use 20 Mar 2011
By tallpete33 TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Finally looking to get into the 21st century with a smartphone, after much research I settled on this little beaut. It was a toss up between this and the HTC Wildfire but the SF had way better reviews and is cheaper too (I paid less than 90 inc 10 top up which is amazing value but look around and you can proably get it for less now).

Build quality is very good for a phone of this price (though not as solid as the much pricier iPhone or Galaxy obviously) and the screen is nice and bright and the speaker loud and clear. It comes with a mains charger from which the USB cable detaches which is a neat idea. The case is sleek and understated in a sort of dark grey/brown colour and has a nice grippy feel to it which should help accidental drops. The power button also works as a sleep/standby control and there are a home, menu and back buttons at the bottom of the screen. Apart from the speaker up/down on the sides they're all the buttons you need. If desired, you can get a cheap and cheerful silicone cover to brighten up and protect it in different colours.

It was not a difficult job to switch it to vodaphone, simply a case of entering the IMEI number (found on the box or under the battery) on a website (just google unlocking Orange San Francisco - aka zte blade) which then generates the required code. I was all at sea with it at first, particularly texting but turn it sideways and get to grips with the dictionary and you are laughing. I love the way it handles texts as threads and automatically adds frequently used contacts to favourites. The android is full of great little touches like that which make it a joy to use. I'm still using the 2.1 firmware but will look to up it to 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best value phone around 28 Feb 2011
Once you have got rid of all the Orange guff you not only have a phone that's pleasant to use but also has an extended battery life! The previous reviewer is right though, it's a techie's job to root the phone and remove the apps.

The display is awesome and the touchscreen a joy to use and Android 2.1 works smoothly. It's a shame it's not 2.2 so I can move all the apps to the memory card but that's a minor inconvenience. The only real blot on the landscape is the camera which is pants, but the rest of the phone makes up for shortcomings in that department.

Even with it's faults I've still given it five stars because it's such good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great android phone for techies. 18 Feb 2011
By Michael
Great phone if functionality, speed and reliability is what you are looking for. Not the most beautiful or original looking phone, but not ugly either. It's processor is quite fast and its RAM more than enough to run tens of Android apps at once. I can only compare its performance to android phones costing 4 times as much. Highly recommended for techies on a budget.

5.0 out of 5 stars How did they do it?! 12 Jun 2011
Bought my phone in white from argos, as soon as i tried it i didnt like the orange interface (i was unlocking to O2 for my current sim anyway), so i done a quick google and within half a hour, i had the phone rooted, unlocked, removed orange branding and also running Android 2.2 FroYo (now running Gingerbread 2.3).

If that sounds like a bit much for you, there is a app in android market that will unlock the phone for you in seconds and its free (search ZTE Blade).

The phone runs great and i have a signal in places i never have a O2 signal on top end Blackberrys and iPhones, so im made up with that, plus the android interface is easy to use but takes a good hour or so getting used to. The screen is lovely and responsive (better than anything in this price range).

In the box you get a microUSB charger (normal for android nowadays) a USB wall connection, set of headphones and all the paperwork.

The included headphone are of a really cheap quality- think pound shop, then go down one level. So if youre planning on listening to music go out and buy a new set (i bought JVC Gummy headphones for 5 and theyre fine) and youre problem is solved.

The screen is great and has lots of pixels (slightly lower resolution than iPhone4) and great colour reproduction, the phone is made out of quite a cheap plastic but for under 100 you cant moan, ive seen top end samsung phones with cheaper feeling plastics though. The camera is 3.2mp autofocus, although ive tried to take a few snaps, the camera is just awful so dont buy if youre snap happy or plan on replacing a point-and-shoot.
The phone also comes with 2gb micro SD which i now have 8gb card in and it takes with no problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have 1 May 2011
By punch_t
This is an amazing entry level android phone. It does most of what all the expensive models do, is easily unlocked (for free) and you can replace all the expensive Orange Apps from the free market. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zte Blade/Orange San Francisco 1 Mar 2011
By Bruce
Verified Purchase
This is my first smart phone and I wanted to do it on a budget. This is a great phone for that.

I was able to follow on-line instructions to un-lock it, de-brand it and load Android 2.2 on it with out a hitch. It does everything I expected of it and will be mine for at least 12 months on my O2 contract. I have loaded many apps on it but, the android 2.2 OS comes with plenty.

I've had fun with the wifi, 3G connection, GPS and sending lots of free text. I like the way it rotates so that the screen key pad has bigger buttons for writing. It's been used to get me in the car to my destination in a large complicated city. I love the different sounds that can be used for ring tones and alarms. I was able to set one of my favourite songs as a ring tone. Could prove embarrasing.

The only thing I wish was better is the battery life. Though I have nothing to compare it to and find that it's not a problem for my use. It has a USB cable and that can be plugged into a computer or the wall adaptor to charge. It lasts the day and longer when I use it just as a phone.

Sadly there is no way to get the BBC iPlayer on this. Found a few other places and enjoy NPR form the USA as an alternative.

The fm radio in Android 2.2 didnt work very well so I got another from MIUI modified for the zte blade. Lots of useful information at android.MoDaCo and chrislowthian.
