One of the classic rock albums from the 90s, and a FANTASTIC mess of raw
blues, punk, funk and rock n roll, done with chicken grease and trash-king
attitude. PLAY THE BLUES...PUNK!!
Put Beck's "Loser", a Stones song, The Birthday Party, hilarious lyrics,
some juke joint blues, a funky drummer and a reeeal high strung preacherman
in a bag, shake it like an alligators tale and you might end up with the
sound and the blast of THE BLOOOOZE EXPLOSIOOON!
I saw another reviewer called it "a lo-fi hi-style stroke of masculine
genius", heh heh, and that's a description that is pretty accurate for songs
like "Full Grown" and "Blues X Man". There is not one remotely bad song on
"Orange", but if I had to pick 4 favourites I would choose "Flavor", "Brenda",
"Dissect" and "Bellbottoms".
This is The Blues Explosion masterpiece. Spencer and Judah Bauer have never
sounded as ferocious as this, and Russel Simins' drumming is amazing all the
way through; hard, heavy and kick-ass funky.
As I already own the Experimental Remixes album, I don't care too much about
the bonus tracks, but all in all you get 6 added dustkickers; Both mixes of
Flavor, a second version of Bellbottoms with a new drum break, the kick-ass
live medley of Brenda-Blues Explosion Man-78 Style-Greyhound, the slightly
harder version of "Very Rare" and the "Calvin" mix.
The liner notes are excellent and very well written. It's interesting to read
about the recording process of Orange and about some of their heaviest
influences; Jerry Lee Lewis, The Meters and James Brown.
"...James Brown, whose influence on Spencer, Simins and Bauer weighed heavily on
all parts of the presentation, but especially on the drum-smashing, turn-on-a-diming,
rhythm-and-blues-exploding revues that had become their nightly ritual and had
done as much or more as the records to prime the pump for the success of Orange."
(From the liner notes by Mike Edison)
It's hard to compare the Blues Explosion to anyone. And how could you? They are
in a league of their own. IT'S THE BLUUUES EXPLOSION LEAGUE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!
THEY ARE NO.1 IN KANSAS CITY! NEW YORK CITY! THEY ARE NO.1 MY CITY! YOUR CITY!
ANY GODDAMN CITY! GET DOWN WITH IT!!!
The only album I can think of from recent years that holds any resemblance to
"Orange", is Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Fever To Tell", so if you dig that album and have
missed The Blues Explosion, you're in for a blast.
It's unbelievable that Orange didn't make a bigger impact when it was
released. Nobody sounded as raw then. Nobody sounds as raw now.
BELLBOTTOMS!BELLBOTTOMS!!BELLBOTTOMS!!!
