While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars Great American comedy! 20 Sep 2003
All you need to know: This film is FUN-NY!! Sometimes it's really super just to kick back with a light hearted film (with the obvious poignant message at the end of course) and just enjoy it. Jack Black is once again a crazy, dim character with some great one-liners and surreal jokes that are just hysterical, and Schuyler Fisk makes a decent and slightly more sophisticated come-back after her role in "The Babysitters Club". Colin Hanks is cute as Shaun and his obvious love for family and friends is quite touching.
With a crazy and fun plotline that really holds your attention, a great soundtrack and clever humour combined with traditional slapstick this film is superb! Watch it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Shall I naked and start a revolution?..... 6 Dec 2013
Shaun Brumder is from Orange County, and dreams of going to Stanford to become a writer, and to get away from his dysfunctional family household.

Except he runs into one complication after another starting when his application is rejected after his guidance counsellor sends the wrong application.

So, Shaun goes to great lengths with a little help from his girlfriend Ashley and his drugged-out loser brother Lance to get into Stanford any way they see fit....

This was another case of bad advertising here in the UK. When it was first released, it was heralded as a stoner movie, with Black being the focus of the whole movie.

Eleven years down the line, I decided to give it a chance, and while its nothing special, just another caper about some wrong papers being sent, and one mans journey for his dream, it's the wealth of support that the film has.

Not to mention that the film has so many prolific actors in it, probably because the director is Lawrence Kasdan. It isn't a bad thing, but its a case of not what you know, but who you know.

So all in all, it's pretty generic stuff, but not including credits, the film last for just over 72 minutes, so it comes and goes swiftly.

3.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant comedy that will keep you smiling 9 May 2008
What it may not do is make you roll around the floor laughing. I found it amusing not hysterically funny, but what made it for me was the feel good nature of it, its charming and likable. Well worth a look, and remind yourself that jack black can be funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars The real OC 17 Jun 2005
Orange County. The reason I bought this is because Jack Black is my god. However, although the appearance of the aforementioned genius was good, the whole film is actually very good. The storyline is pretty basic but the actors come off with great performances. Also doesn't seem like a 12 certificate which is a bonus for me. Rewatchable which is the key to buying a dvd.
