Amazon.co.uk Review

While it invites charges of Hollywood nepotism, Orange County overcomes that stigma with a delightful cast of newcomers and veterans alike. It's no better or worse than many teen comedies, but director Jake Kasdan (son of director Lawrence Kasdan) astutely combines teen-flick staples (stoner gags, raucous parties) with a biting undercurrent of southern California absurdity. This comedic texture helps Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) to prove their big-screen promise. They play (respectively) an Orange County teen and aspiring writer named Shaun who yearns for admission to Stanford, and his sensible girlfriend who knows just how to nurture his dreams. Much of the comedy arises from the foibles of Shaun's dysfunctional family (played to perfection by Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara and John Lithgow), while unbilled cameos by Ben Stiller and Kevin Kline add zest to a movie that tries to be different, and mostly succeeds. --Jeff Shannon

4.0 out of 5 stars Great American comedy!, 20 Sep 2003

All you need to know: This film is FUN-NY!! Sometimes it's really super just to kick back with a light hearted film (with the obvious poignant message at the end of course) and just enjoy it. Jack Black is once again a crazy, dim character with some great one-liners and surreal jokes that are just hysterical, and Schuyler Fisk makes a decent and slightly more sophisticated come-back after her role in "The Babysitters Club". Colin Hanks is cute as Shaun and his obvious love for family and friends is quite touching.
With a crazy and fun plotline that really holds your attention, a great soundtrack and clever humour combined with traditional slapstick this film is superb! Watch it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Teen drivel, 28 Sep 2011

This film must have something going for it as I didn't fall asleep, but that aside it really didn't have many redeeming features for me. In fact the only one I can think of is that its short.

Shaun is a teenager who finds a book on a beach, which sparks off his decision to want to be a writer. To further advance his writing he wants to go to Stanford where he would be able to meet the author of the book he found. However due to an administrative error his application is rejected.

The film alternates between standard teen type comedy, which I've seen done much better elsewhere, and then sudden lurches to a drippy message movie with songs that reflect Shauns angst or frustration. So we go from man in underpants (Jack Black) bumbling in on an important meeting (I didn't laugh) to Shaun walking down the street with an appropriately worded song playing in the background, reflecting the characters sadness or whatever.

The irony is that at one point in the film one of the characters (can't remember who) is talking about the faults in many writers, or perhaps writing in general and describes the main fault of this film.

Maybe if I was 30 years younger I might appreciate it, but I found it entirely predictable and suggest only purchasing if you know its your sort of film or its very cheap.
