Product Description

Synopsis

The destruction of the French village of Oradour and the massacre of its population in June 1944 by the SS Das Reich Division ranks as one of the most notorious atrocities of the Second World War. The scars that were left will never fully heal and there are those that would argue that they should remain as a lesson to future generations. The ruins of the village have been preserved as a memorial to the victims and a new museum has recently been opened by President Chirac. Philip Beck, an Englishman long resident in the area, is very probably the greatest living authority on this appalling event. He has now updated and substantially revised his earlier book and the result makes compelling yet shocking reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars The jury is still out, but what happened is undeniable, 14 Feb 2005
By Mr. Simon C. Lewis - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
An absorbing, and occasionally horrifying, account of one of the darkest chapters in the history of the 2nd World War, charting the events of 10th June 1944, the aftermath of the massacre, the subsequent trial and the debate about maintaining the ruins into the 21st century. The question "Why Oradour?" remains unanswered to this day, and author Philip Beck makes no attempt to draw any irrefutable conclusions, merely providing plenty of circumstantial evidence regarding the choice of this sleepy Limousin village as the scene for a bloodbath. A chilling account of the movements of and atrocities committed by the SS in the days prior to their arrival in Oradour, as well as the ambushes inflicted on them by the French resistance, give some insight into what might have prompted such an appalling act of calculated cruelty, but beyond the known facts, which are chronicled in commendably thorough detail, the reader is left to consider several theories in an attempt to explain the last terrible hours of Oradour's existence. My only complaints are the very variable quality of the photographs, some of which are indeed very graphic, with others clearly downloaded from the internet, and an annoyingly high number of spelling and printing errors. Otherwise this is an eminently readable, if uncompromising, retelling of an infamous testament to the evil of which the human race is capable.

4.0 out of 5 stars The death of a village, 18 Sep 2009
By Mrs. V. C. Baker (Kent England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A very interesting book covering the basic details of the destruction of the village of Oradour, and the various theories put forward as to why this atrosity took place. In the main the photo's in the book are quite good, one or two that have obviously been downloaded from the internet are not of a very high quality.

Anyone interested in reading about this event in France will find enough detail in this book to answer most of their questions.Definately a good read.
