This book has helped me a great deal in preparing for the exam and it will definitely give you a good shot at passing it. It is however a shame that it contains quite a few errors in the review questions and that a few topics are a bit hazy. The book invites you to carry on studying as the build-up is good and the reading pleasant. The biggest down point I found is that when you send in the mistakes you found in the book by email, there is no response from the author as the preface promises.

Format:Hardcover
This book goes one step further in its explanation of SQL concepts and techniques. The work done in the Developer exam guide was too shallow for a deep understanding in order to correctly answer the 'trick' questions. most (if not all) of the oracle8i concepts included in the text aren't asked in the exam, but It's good to have an Idea of it anyway. More work has been done on the SQL*PLUS reporting, which is good. The last chapter which has three tests is a plus as it really comes close to the real thing. The downside of the book is the fact that some of the errors in the developer guide have found their way into this book as well as some new ones. also, the multiple column subqueries concept wasn't adequately covered as you might see some questions based on this that weren't covered in the book. If you use this book, as well as using the Oracle CBT, You can be sure to answer at least 43 questions right.

Don't buy this book 9 Dec 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Book reviews should help people who have not purchased a book to make a buying decision. If you like frustration, like researching information in books and checking it for accuracy as if you were the author, go ahead, buy the book. But if you want a book that prepares you to take the OCP exams, buy something else.

Fire the editor. 30 April 2002
By M. Whitman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is comprehensive and easy to understand, but contains many errors and contradictions. The Excercise questions are often vague or outright wrong. Furthermore the answer is just what letter is write with no explanation.

My advice go elsewhere. I hear SYBEX is good.

Good review, has errors 26 Sep 2001
By David Reno - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I was a DBA two years ago. I had about 3 years experience using Oracle. I found this book to be a good review, though I found myself finding various errors. Some errors were typo's, some were just my own disagreement with the author. I also felt like the author didn't have much experience as an Oracle DBA--this may be unjustified, but it was my feeling based on reading his examples and comments. Nonetheless, the sections of the book match up with the overview of knowledge required by the OCP test 1Z0-001 very well, and by design. I just read through the book and took one of the sample tests. Taking the real test, I scored 55/57 (39 is passing), so I think the book significantly helped me prepare.

Another problem with this book is that it is not followed up by others in this series. Now I am ready for the next test, but guess what, no book! That's right, I have the option of buying the book with all five tests, but not one book per test, like this one. I think I'm switching to the "Exam Cram" series due to that (even though I hate the title!)

I hope this helps,
Regards,
David
